Getting Started with Google Workshop

Google is an excellent starting point for finding information related to your research assignments. Come to this session to learn how to use Google’s advanced search options, when to move on to Google Scholar to find academic/scholarly resources, and how to use the library’s new online search tool to  find full text.

This workshop will take place in Buchanan B 125 on Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 12:00PM – 1:00PM

Save valuable research time! Online research resources offer an array of tools to help you stay current in your field. In this workshop you’ll learn how to use current awareness tools to: get notified when new articles and dissertations are published on your topic; get Table of Contents notifications when the latest issue of your favorite journal is published; and set up an RSS Reader for RSS feeds to alert you to new content in blogs, journals, databases, and newspapers.

Datasets Demystified

Does your work require a data set for secondary analysis? Come to this session to learn how to find and download data from household surveys. The class will focus on the library’s collection of survey data as well as data archives to which UBC researchers have full access: Statistics Canada surveys; Public opinion polls collected by the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research; and Survey data created by academics, governments, research institutes and media outlets and housed at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

UBC has joined SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), the Public Library of Science (PLoS), The Students for Free Culture, OASIS (the Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook); Open Access Directory (OAD); and eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries), and over 120 institutions worldwide to celebrate in the First International Open Access Week. Various events hosted by UBC Library address the three themes of open access around the world, surfacing UBC scholarship and journal publishing. Attend a workshop, participate in a panel discussion, and hear from UBC colleagues about how they participate in the open access movement. Come learn about open access and share your perspective!

RefWorks for the Arts

Description: RefWorks is a web-based citation management tool, sponsored by the UBC Library, and available free-of-charge to current UBC faculty, staff, and students. In this hands-on workshop you will create your own personal database in RefWorks, learn how to add references, and use these references when writing a paper, automatically formatting your footnotes and bibliography in the citation style of your choice. We will focus on indexes, databases, and citation styles used by scholars in the Arts.
