Educational Technology? Are we talking about the same thing?
I just read a very interesting discussion in my ETEC 533 class: Technology in science and mathematics teaching. The discussion revolved around the analysis of an interview with a high school teacher who was discussing how he uses technology in his classes. While listening to the interview with this teacher I noticed that he uses the word “educational technology” in a very different sense that I use it. For him, educational technology mostly revolves around using “Power Point” and making it interactive by using animations and different media. I thought it was interesting. The concept of educational technology is perceived by different people differently. For me educational technologies comprise things like Vernier Logger Pro, computer animations, peer response systems (clickers), tablets that use digital ink technologies and software like Classroom Present or Dyknow, Ink Survey software, various graphing calculators, modeling software, Video Analysis software, various applets allowing students do virtual experiments, etc. So probably when we discuss educational technologies we should start with what we MEAN BY THEM. Are we all talking about the same thing? I am not sure…
