Women in SMET Disciplines in Canada

Who would think that I will keep posting comments on my blog well over the end of my ETEC 533 course. I am not required to do that, yet I feel that some of the recent developments in Canadian Academy and Canadian Funding Agencies make me very concerned. On May 20th, Anna Marina Tremonti, a popular host of the CBC “The Current” show on May 20, 2010 interviewed three people about the newly established Canada Excellence Research Chair Program: Dr. Suzanne Fortier (NSERC President), Dr. Wendy Robbins – an English and Women’s Studies professor at the University of New Brunswick and  Dr. Valerie Davidson – a Professor at the University of Guelph. The topic of the interview was the representation of women in Canadian Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology disciplines. Note that last month 19 candidates were selected for this prestigious inaugural chair positions, yet among them there were … 0 (zero – none) women. This is something that makes me think. I guess the past cannot be erased or healed very quickly… The question is, what can we do to move forward and to make sure women can participate to the fullest in SMET fields?
