Teaching in BJ – Week 2

FarSighted_Optics

I started teaching the second week of my course today. I have enjoyed the day very much as I had a very good interpretor, and I knew much better how to engage students. Today we discussed how to use clickers in the classroom and solved some interesting problems. It is amazing that Chinese teachers twice today provided me with teaching ideas that I have never thought of. For example, the photo above is based on the paper from The Physics Teacher that discussed how one can guess the eye sight from looking through person’s glasses. This is a great paper and I often used these ideas, but now the teachers started taking photos of each other and then analysing photos to discuss eye sight. I thought it was great.

Then we discussed the problem about mixing tea and milk – two identical glasses one with milk and another one with tea. Then you pour 3 tea spoons of milk into tea and then 3 tea spoons of the mixture back into milk. We came up with 4 different explanations and they figured it out after a group discussion. This was great!

Then we discussed how one can find the center of gravity and what does the idea of the centre of gravity mean. And it was all done using different technologies – clickers, simulations, etc. Tomorrow we will focus on Vernier sensors. I am looking forward to it!
