Novak, this couldn't be more timely as we are just about to launch a WPMu pilot at Camosun. I really appreciate (and heed) this advice as we begin down the road.

You didn't sound preachy at all to me, just very practical, and I need that dearly because like you said, getting your fingers burnt hurts, a lot :)

I'm an absolute fan of what you are masterminding over at UBC, and I really am looking forward to this series.

Hi Jim,
Apologies if I sounded preachy, that was definitely not the intention, I guess I was trying to remind firstly myself about the importance of being a bit more conservative when it comes to running system like this, as we have, like you, burnt our fingers quite a few times.

Novak,
I have to thank you for this, because my edupunk coolness is indeed not worth a nickel when the system is exploding. Looking forward to this series and I will be integrating much of this into UMW Blogs over the next several months. I'm not so sure I agree with you on themes and plugins, I think a system has to have some flexibility for this stuff if it is going to be at all relevant, but at the same time I think e have been exceptionally liberal.

Tuning into the super-novak for the WPMu institutional skinny.

Hi!

I am unable to find this plugin.
The blogpost has been removed.

Can you please point me in the direction of the wiki-inc plugin, or its successor?

Regards,
Robert

Novak

Your approach isn't a bad one, but as far as I'm concerned the WP Thread Comment plugin you mention doesn't really deliver threading in a user-friendly or useful manner. By the time a thread is deeply nested the quotes of quotes of yet more quotes have entirely obscured the thread itself; it becomes impossible to follow.

For a thread to be usable and trackable to users requires an extension of your "grid" approach, using a scrollable split-screen view - with "your" list of threads in the upper display and the body content in a lower scrollable screen, the upper screen thread display should then be expandable/collapsable at any node on the tree.

With a suitable next/last and begining/end [of thread] plugin and a quote plugin users can then view and respond to the thread root or to any other reply in the thread with great facility.

If you're interested, mail me off list: I can show you screen shots of a fully threaded mail/news reader which I helped to design and implement in the early 90s which does exactly this.
