Colour Wars aka The Hunger Games of Totem Park

Picture this: The most peaceful sleep of your life. You’re lying down on a bed made of clouds and kittens and happiness. You’re dreaming of that one time you did that thing that you’re really proud of and it’s the best experience of your life.

Ya, quite the morning. But after the initial shock wore off, I was decked out in green and gearing to get started! (more…)

I can’t fight this feeling any longer

September 20th, 2012 · 2 Comments

It’s finally here. The moment I’ve been dreading for so long. The moment that I thought would never catch up to me.

I have homework to do.

Well, to be more specific, I’ve finally gotten around to doing the homework that has slowly been piling up. Dry labs, math quizzes, online assignments, pre-readings, the list goes on and on.

I feel like that’s something I’ve experienced over and over again in high school, but moving to a completely new city and making so many new friends has been pretty overwhelming. I feel like I’ve pushed aside the main reason I came to UBC: to study.

Despite all the fun activities going on around me I need to make time for my school work. I guess that includes finishing this blog post and actually reading my biology textbook….

Bring it on

A word about res life…

September 18th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Some random thoughts about living in Salish House, Totem Park that I just HAD to share at 1 in the morning…

One thing I’ve noticed about res life: IT SEEMS LIKE MY HOUSE NEVER GOES TO SLEEP. I’ve literally slept before midnight once since I’ve been at UBC, and that was on the first night! I can’t complain though, I’m usually the one keeping my friends up till the wee hours of the night. Whether it be mindless chatter about who-knows-what, or attempting to do the Bio quiz due in 7 hours, it seems like Salish House always has someone awake. I’ve spent waaaaay too many delirious nights staying up till 4am mumbling about throwing spoons at people and woojaboojas (don’t ask…)

The Food: The dining hall at Totem is super…. (more…)

First Week

September 13th, 2012 · 2 Comments

So my first week at UBC has officially come to an end, and I gotta say: I LOVE IT HERE. The people in my res (SAY WHAT? SA-LISH!) and classes are all genuinely friendly and helpful. I feel like I’m part of a close knit community. Being a student who was coming to UBC without knowing a single soul here, I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to make friends who were like my high school friends. What if I never ‘clicked’ with the right person? But safe to say, I’ve gotten past that hurdle and I’m truly enjoying my time here.

The first week in UBC is FULL of fantastic events. From toga parties at the fraternities to the bonfires at Wreck Beach, your first week at UBC is guaranteed to be as exciting as mine! There are so many different events you can choose from, you’ll never have a dull moment. I can’t reveal ALL the secrets to first week, so you’ll just have to discover for yourself how fun it is here! What I can say is that I’m 100% confident I will have a jam-packed year here at UBC.

Sidenote: If every week at UBC is as busy as my first week has been, then I’m not going to get ANY work done! Gotta start hunkering down!

Imagine Day!

September 9th, 2012 · No Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve been on a computer, so I apologize for the late post!

Imagine Day is UBC’s orientation for all first-year students. You’re put into a small group of students who you have classes with called your MUG (My Undergraduate Group) and are given a tour of the campus, a Student Success workshop and the highlight of the day: The Pep Rally! Each faculty is told to wear a certain colour (Blue for Sciences, Red for Engineering, Purple for Arts etc.) and is taught a certain cheer. Imagine Day takes place on the first day of classes (so no school!) and is a really fun time! (more…)
