Hello Everyone!

Hi All,

Writing an “introduction” post is a great way to let others know who you are and what your project is all about.  For my introduction post i’ll tell you a little about myself, why i got involved in Community service-learning and a little about my exciting Reading Week 2008 project.

So, I’m a graduate student at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) here at UBC, and i’m studying Community Development.  I’m a big advocate for Community Service Learning (CSL) at UBC and wish I knew about it during my undergrad!  I got involved with CSL because I saw it as a very practical way to learn and a great way to get involved in the community. I learned through connecting theory with actual practice and I learned more about myself through this process than I ever would have imagined.. and I met some wonderful people along the way.

Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to be a project leader for a Reading Week 2008 project. I worked with a group of CIVIL 201 students at the YWCA Rooftop Gardens. We had a packed three days where the students designed, built and planted in mini-greenhouses at the YWCA. The YWCA rooftop garden donates all their produce to Crabtree Corner in the Downtown Eastside and in order to extend their growing season they needed these structures. The students worked hard and they rocked!

Here is a bit of a picture journey of our project for you:

How did we get there??

These are just a few snap shots of what went on over those 3 days…

It was a lot of hard work.. but well worth it! Good job team!

    Hi Danielle,
I tried to categorize my post but there wasn’t one for my project, or any of the Admiral Seymour projects! I tried to add it but it said that I do not have permission to do that. I categorized it more generally, but are you able to add the three Seymour projects to the school list please?
    Thanks!
    Gillian
