RefWorks Classic Interface Discontinued after December 31, 2011

Posted: December 16th, 2011, by Katherine Miller

RefWorks new interface which was introduced at UBC this summer, will now be the sole interface for working with RefWorks. Since the summer, users have been able to switch between the 2.0 interface and the “classic” interface.

RefWorks will no longer be supporting the classic interface effective January 1, 2012. There will be no impact on the underlying data in your RefWorks accounts.

Internet Explorer 9 Users

Posted: November 10th, 2011, by Katherine Miller

Internet Explorer 9 users may find they are unable to edit the Title field when manually entering a reference. This is a known bug. There are a few ways to fix this:

  • In the top right-hand side of the URL bar, you may see a little broken page: . Click on this icon and it will turn blue: . You should now have full functionality in RefWorks.
  • You can also turn this on by clicking the little wheel at the very top right-hand side of your browser window:  and selecting Compatibility Mode.
  • You may also choose to work in another browser.

Switching to 2.0 & Known Compatibility Issues

Posted: October 24th, 2011, by Katherine Miller

2.0 switch date:

All schools will have their default interface switched to RefWorks 2.0 on Tuesday, October 25.* *New users will automatically create an account in 2.0. Users who have been working in Classic will be able to remain in Classic until the end of the 2011. All users will have the option to toggle back and forth between the two interfaces until then.

Known compatibility issues:

* Write-N-Cite is not compatible with the new Mac OS, Lion. We do not have a release date for a compatible version, but it is expected this fall.

* Write-N-Cite is not compatible with Word 2011 (Mac). The new version of WNC should also address this issue.

* Write-N-Cite often has trouble working with .docx files. Please resave the file as a .doc  and try running your bibliography again.

* Internet Explorer 9 users will need to turn on Compatibility Mode      <http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-to-use-Compatibility-View-in-Internet-Explorer-9> in order to have full functionality (they will otherwise be unable to edit the Title field when entering references manually)

Lion and Write-N-Cite

Posted: September 28th, 2011, by Ursula Ellis

Write-N-Cite 2.5 is currently not compatible with Mac OS X Lion. Until a new version of Write-N-Cite is released, Lion users can select the One-Line/Cite view in RefWorks as a workaround. This tutorial and this video explain the process.

Write-N-Cite & MS Word 2010

Posted: September 7th, 2011, by Katherine Miller

WnC III is compatible with MS Word 2010.

If the application is not working for you, please try the following:

- Word 2010 must be completely installed on the local computer and then the computer must be restarted before Write-n-Cite III can be installed.

- Microsoft now offers a version of Word 2010 called ‘Click to Run’ that installs a virtualization handler to your local computer and then runs the application from the web. Write-n-Cite III is not compatible with this version of Word. The full application must be installed on the local computer for Write-n-Cite III to recognize the installation of MS Word 2010.

Unique Identifiers Needed to Create New Accounts

Posted: August 18th, 2011, by Katherine Miller

Effective August 18th,2011

New users will now require a unique identifier. RefWorks is planning to eventually discontinue the use of the group code. In preparation for this, users will now need to register a login name that has not yet been used on our server. This means it might take a few tries to create a new account. (Group codes will remain for the foreseeable future).

One option of a unique identifier is to use your UBC email account as your RefWorks ID.

Refworks 2.0 launches July 4, 2011

Posted: June 7th, 2011, by Teresa Lee

The library will launch Refworks 2.0 on Monday, July 4, 2011. The new interface provides a cleaner layout and clearer navigation, while retaining all the functionalities you’re familiar with in Refworks Classic.

Though the default will change to Refworks 2.0, the  ‘Classic’ interface (the red and white version) is expected to be available until December of  this year. You can toggle back to the Classic version using the Refworks Classic link at the top right-hand corner of your Refworks account. Write’n Cite remains the same (i.e. in the Classic mode) for now.
We know the next few months will involve some adjustment as you transition to the new look, but we’re here to help.

For current users who want to preview changes in Refworks 2.0, here’s a short video from Refworks:
