Wow... you certainly came to school with more in your bag of tech than I did. From the readings in this class, I've definitely felt left behind in the dust as far as online communication goes - I haven't internalized it in the way that a lot of others have. This presents a problem for me as a teacher as well. Seeing the articles for Classroom 3.0 makes me realize that the education that I'm providing isn't living up to the potential that it could be. I'm currently running ENGL 199 through SFU, and I'm using a WebCT Vista program that looks exactly the same as the one that we're using for 559M. What I'm not doing, however, is taking advantage of all of the other tools that my students (mostly in the age bracket of 18-22) are coming to the table with. Seeing the different outlets for communicating information as I've done over the course of this term has shown me that there are many ways to implement these in the work that I do - something that I plan on incorporating through extension of the site when I teach ENGL 199 again next semester. Speaking as an instructor, the university (my university anyways) has definitely not hopped on board with the utilization of these tools... I have a feeling that it's going to be up to us when we're out in the workforce to get the job done ourselves.

I just started using iGoogle a few days ago, and it's already helping me keep track of everything - I wish that i had started using it at the beginning of the course, as it's keeping tabs of everyone's blog now and updating me when people post (I know that this is pretty basic for most, but it's a new game to me). What I especially like about it is that it offers suggestions for newbies who don't know about all the different services out there, walking us through the capabilities in an easy to understand manner.

I'm also overwhelmed by all of the new sites that I've encountered, and like you, I don't see how it's even possible to keep up without an aggregator of some kind. Deidre's comment here was a little surprising though, in that it suggests that people use more than one aggregator to keep track of all of their different feeds... are there so many different things to keep track of that we're eventually going to need an aggregator to aggregate our aggregators?

I love my iGoogle too. Although I do find it is a source of distraction sometimes - I have started minimizing some of my fun widgets so I don't see them all the time and can concentrate on what needs to be done.
The number of aggregators is overwhelming, but some of them are so cool. It was neat to check out ning, and I wouldn't use it as an aggregator myself (right now anyway), but I would use it to find out what others have aggregated - let someone else do the work.
(if your into graffiti knitting you can't beat subversiveyarn.ning.com)

Roen,

When I started to read your blogpost, I thought "Will Roen talk about time management and social media"? You diverged into using social media to bring groups of people together which was also interesting.

But, I encourage you (and your peers), to think a little bit about dealing with information overload, burnout and time pressures. How do we deal with these issues without 'falling off the wagon'?

It's a challenge for all of us to maintain our sanity in the face of info-glut - but perhaps we can share our ideas to prevent it.

Hi Roen,
It's toolbars, widgets and doodads that I get asked about more than what's the smallest bone in the wrist called. The challenge sometimes is being able to use our experience in learning a new tool so that we can teach it to others. In medicine, there's a maxim of: "Observe one, do one and teach one". Could you teach me to use a Firefox toolbar?

Why not create a two minute screencast:
http://screenr.com/

It might be helpful to your classmates. You could also load it to your blog and talk about the experience.

I usually work with web-based applications like http://www.showdocument.com
I use it for sharing my designs and documents with partners and clients,
but i guess it can used for other purposes too. If you're looking for a free solution you should check it out.

Your opening paragraph is so great! That happens to me all the time. I hate the "Oh, you must love books!" line. I think it is because libraries and the library profession is about so much more than books and it drives me crazy that even my close friends still think all I do is hang out with books.

You really capture the importance of libraries, not just as places for books, but places of learning and access, where format is not the most important part. It reminds me of many reasons I love my job. Thanks.

I agree with you on this issue! I think that libraries are facilitators in the global world, as well as equalizers. Those two words actually go hand-in-hand if you think about. Anyway, I liked your post ... and also dislike the question "Oh, you're a librarian, you must love books," which is why I stress the Information Science aspect of my degree as much as the Librarian. :)

Breaking your jaw? You seem to have a lovely jaw!

I am glad to hear you'll be accessible via digital media.

Take time to heal and rest Roen.
