Getting an oil change and blood pressure check

Three decades into the women’s health movement, Dr. Larry Goldenberg, Head of the Department of Urologic Sciences, is hoping to replicate its success with the other half of the population. On Nov. 17, he launched the Men’s Health Initiative of BC, a project aimed at bringing together the best research about men’s health and disseminating it to clinicians and the general public. That second part may not be so easy — men have a reputation (deserved or not) for being less-than-diligent about maintaining their own health. “Many 40-year-old men are more interested in looking after their cars than their bodies,” says Dr. Goldenberg, who is founding Director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre. So he is thinking of taking his health awareness campaign to places where men would be a captive audience: hockey and football games, or — you guessed it — automobile service shops.
