Project Paws (previously known as Pet Visits) have always been an extremely well received event on the UBC campus, reaching all corners of the student population and being hugely successful overall. Pet therapy has been proven to greatly help our mental health and general well being. For students that are always on the go, having a moment to play or cuddle with a furry friend can be a little slice of heaven. These visits help students destress, offer a relaxing break, and some slobbery love.

This semester, MHAC is offering 4 partnered Project Paws events on a first come first serve basis. To make it as fair as possible, we have set up an application to be filled out by your events representative.

Please read everything below. Previous Project Paws have been successful due to the hard work and amazing teamwork of the two groups collaborating on the event. Please pay attention to the points below so we can continue to host these wonderful events!

  • We require MINIMUM 3 WEEKS between the date of the visit and when your application has been approved.
  • How quickly you get approved by us will depend on your ability to provide a confirmed location and payment to our account.
  • We ask for full payment MINIMUM 1 WEEK before the expected event date, with a written explanation if this deadline is not met. Failure to meet this deadline may result in the forfeiture of your event.
  • Our only stipulation for these events is that they are to be at no cost to those attending.
  • We ask that a Facebook and OrgSync event be created MINIMUM 1 WEEK before the event, acknowledging both UBC MHAC and Pets & Friends. Facebook: We want to be acknowledged in the event title, tagged in the description, made a co-host and have our logo added to the event cover photo. Additionally, please make sure that “Project Paws” appears in the title of the event.
  • Please remember that for each Project Paws the event should be open to all UBC MHAC members, and UBC MHAC members should have priority. This should be stated in the event description. We ask that 4 spots per 15 minute slot be reserved for our members.
  • There is a maximum of 4 people per pet at any one time to avoid overwhelming both owner and pet, so we ask that you help us enforce this rule.
  • If we fill up our spots before the application deadline, we will close the application and notify everyone.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT:

  • A co-sponsorship of $150 (this includes a $50 non-refundable deposit)
  • Suitable location: each pet requires an 8x10ft space and there will be approximately 6 to 7 pets
  • Please note that it is your responsibility to find out if pets are allowed at your location
  • Note: IKB does not allow animals in the building

WHAT WE PROVIDE:

  • Maximum of 7 pets per visit
  • The pets and their owners are provided by Pets and Friends. Each pet is certified as a therapy dog and both owner and pet have gone through training in this regard
  • Gift cards for the volunteer pet owners and treats for the pets
  • MHAC representatives to provide students with mental health information and wellness tips
  • Advertising through our various social media channels as well as in monthly newsletter
