Call for Submissons

by Paige Armstrong (President 2011-12) ~ October 28th, 2011
Visual Art Students,

The Visual Arts Student Association is requesting submissions to this year’s Wall to Wall Student Art Sale. After a successful event last year, we have decided to continue the show in hopes that it will become an annual event.  This is a great opportunity to both exhibit your work as well as have the chance to sell it and make some money!

Here is what you need to know:

When: The official dates of the event are November 22-25th. It will be open from 11am-6pm Tues-Thursday and Friday 10-1pm.

Where: AMS Art Gallery in the Student Union Building at UBC.

Submissions:
- Due to spacial constraints we are only accepting works that are able to easily be hung on the wall space of the gallery. This means photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, etc are ideal.
- We ask that you submit your work via email to paigefour@gmail.com. Please include your name, description of your work, suggested price as well as a photo of the piece. The deadline for this is Sunday, November 20th.

- Once you have received confirmation that your work is acceptable for the show then the drop-off time is Monday November 21st from 8:45am-noon. Works must be dropped off at this time because installation will begin immediately afterward. No works after 12:00 will be accepted. If you cannot meet these time constraints then please contactpaigefour@gmail.com to arrange other accommodations (ie, submitting your work earlier).
- Pricing break down: 70% of the Sale goes towards the student and 30% is divided up between VASA and the AMS. This deduction covers both cost of the gallery space as well as advertising for the show.

Again, if you have any questions or concerns please contact paigefour@gmail.com.

We look forward to another successful event and can’t wait to see the work!

Sincerely,
The VASA team.

Wall to Wall Sale

by Paige Armstrong (President 2011-12) ~ October 20th, 2011

Just a heads-up on an upcoming event that you might want to keep in mind. VASA is planning another year of the Wall to Wall student art sale. This will take place in the AMS Gallery in the Student Union Building from November 22-25th. Guidelines for submissions will be sent out via email to all Visual Art Students on November 1st but keep in mind this event is coming up so you can put aside some time to create a piece to submit! We want to be able to cover the walls in a salon-style as we did last year. This means that works of the drawing, print, photography, and painting medium work best for the space. This is an opportunity for students to display their work as well as a chance to sell it. If you have any questions, feel free to email paigefour@gmail.com.

by Yoriko Gillard: VASA president (2010-11) ~ August 22nd, 2011

It has been a great honour to be able to work with enthusiastic and dedicated executive members this past year. As the president of VASA 2010-2011, I would like to thank all the people who have helped, supported, and enabled us to hold many exciting events that we created for the first time for Visual Arts Students of UBC. It was truly a memorable experience that we could have and talk about for a long time.

It is time to pass our legacy to the next team, VASA 2011-12 and we are very excited to hear their new success stories!

Yoriko Gillard

Student Submission: An open letter to the UBC Visual Arts faculty

by Alison Lau ~ March 27th, 2011

An open letter to the UBC Visual Arts faculty,

We feel that there have been a number of negative interactions between students and faculty recently, and are worried about this causing a negative shift in the atmosphere of the department. We want the department to remain a supportive and safe place to experiment, and we would like to create open communication regarding these feelings to ensure that it does.

Specifically, we are referring to events such as the performance in VISA 481, the cleanup of the sculpture graveyard (space between BC Binning and Dorothy Somerset), and conflicts and miscommunication surrounding work in the “Effects become causes” show. We are not interested in assigning blame and likely would not find any of these events too alarming in the singular. We are worried because these events have all happened in rapid succession.

To All Tomorrow’s Parties

February 17th, 2011

The 4th year SFU visual art students are hosting a huge fundraiser art event called, “To All Tomorrow’s Parties” on Thursday, February 17th at the Lion’s Den Gallery, and would love for all local artists, UBC, ECU and VFS art students (in film, theatre, music and the visual arts) to partake in the show! Our goal’s not only to raise funds for our upcoming grad show, but also to showcase and put out some rad talents in and around Vancouver. We are also looking for local bands and musicians to provide some upbeat tunes for the night!
