Project Outline

I can’t say I have specific expectations or assumptions about the projects I’ll be working on with Kelly this semester. I’ve found in general that the experiences I have usually never end up being what I initially expected. Which is a great revelation because it means I go in with an open mind and am ready to go with the flow without finding myself disappointed. It does sound like I’ll be helping her with a video project she’s working on, which will involve a fair amount of scanning of individual printed images from her last art piece “Nearby Nearby” so that she can convert it into a video project.

I’m really interested in seeing how the project turns out. It sounds like its going to be a continuation of her last work, further expanded in a dynamic way. The last project was displayed sort of like a mural on a gallery wall and this one will be a video. What shape or form the video might take I’m not sure yet, but I think it will satisfy her goal which is to highlight the variety of colour/tonal differences of each image. Her work aims to explore the way that objects and images are re-purposed and re-contextualized as well as the cycle of value they go through, and this project will be a continuation of that.

I think it will function as a good introduction to professional art-making for me, which is what I believe is one of the main goals of the class. It will be interesting to learn more about her experience as an artist and how she approaches her career from a creative and practical point of view. It will give me a great opportunity to work collaboratively and hopefully be of some help to Kelly along the way. I’m really interested in expanding my technical abilities and it sounds like I’ll be given plenty of opportunity to do that.

I should check in with Kelly the next time we meet to clarify if she has specific deadlines for this particular project or other ones we’ll be working on together. She mentioned she is working on a proposal for an installation that she has been shortlisted for, but I won’t be working with her on that, and I can’t recall the deadline. It sounds like she has a few projects on the go at once, and I’ll definitely clarify the timing with her next time to make sure I can help her meet those deadlines, if applicable.

Kelly mentioned that she’s looking for a mutually beneficial partnership. She would like me to be able to help her with her projects, and to to take a proactive approach to problem solving. We’ve discussed the details of the work I’ll be doing, and she has given me a clear idea of her expectations for it. These include following a set method and keeping a consistent organizational structure.

We’ve decided that we’ll work on Tuesdays at 1pmfor the duration of the partnership. Although we may have to alter the timing a little bit to accommodate the 50 required hours for the term.

In terms of receiving feedback as the project progresses, I will have to check in with Kelly about how she would like to go about that. I am more than happy to ask for feedback throughout the semester. So far, we have been in contact mainly through e-mail but have exchanged phone numbers as well. It sounds like communication will be mainly on a ‘need-be’ basis.
