WAAP Project Outline

Met with Wil, who runs Wil Aballe Art Projects. He gave me a rundown of how the space works, and he told me about the various upcoming shows and events that the gallery will be putting on. Rather than having me work on one project for the duaration of my time, he’s having me work on many different projects which are all curated by WAAP.

Some of the tasks I’m charged with are:

  • designing a creative display for prints at the Art Toronto Fair and executing the design
  • researching and writing (essays to accompany upcoming shows)
  • coordinating an artist talk at UBC
  • curating an art hang, picking pieces from the WAAP archive with a unifying concept and hopefully selling for potential buyers
  • problem solving lighting for an upcoming exhibition

Wil has a day job and seems pretty flexible, so of now, there’s no set weekly time for me to check in and out of the centre, we establish the hours I’ll come in before hand. We communicate often by email, to keep each other updated on what we’re doing and what needs to be done.

I’m working with Wil and sometimes another employee who works upstairs at Fazakas Gallery as well. LaTeisha, who runs Fazakas, shares a storage space with Wil, and you need to enter Fazakas to get to WAAP, so there’s much ongoing communication between the two centres.

I haven’t worked with Wil directly yet, but it seems he’ll give me feedback in person. Right now we communicate a lot by email, as there’s more to be done right now with preparation for the art fair, Art Toronto.
