Water Ionizers Vs. Tap/Bottled Water

A water ionizer is a kitchen appliance which first filters the water and then uses the process of Electrolysis to create higher alkaline water that has a negative charge (anti-oxidant) and effectively turns the water into Hydroxyl ions (OH-).

The onboard filters are designed to filter out the chlorine and many heavy metals like lead and arsenic. After thewater is restructured in the electrolysis process it has a smaller molecular structure. This water is more effective for hydrating our bodies and has been used by many athletes around the world during the last decade.

According to this Michigan Government Paper on Water ions:

Water (H20) contains both hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions. The pH of water is a measurement of the concentration of H+ ions, using a scale that ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered “neutral”, since concentrations of H+ and OH- ions are equal. Liquids or substances with pH measurements below 7 are considered “acidic”, and contain more H+ ions than OH- ions. Those with pH measurements above 7 are considered “basic” or “alkaline,” and contain more OH- ions than H+ ions. For every one unit change in pH, there is approximately a ten-fold change in acidity or alkalinity. Therefore, a pH of 4 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 5. Similarly, a pH of 9 is 10 times more alkaline than a pH of 8 and 100 times more alkaline than a pH of 7. Pure deionized water is neutral, with a pH of 7.

Natural water usually has a pH between 6.5 and 8.5. While there are natural variations in pH, many pH variations are due to human influences. Fossil fuel combustion products, especially automobile and coal-fired power plant emissions, contain nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which are converted to nitric acid and sulfuric acid in the atmosphere. When these acids combine with moisture in the atmosphere, they fall to earth as acid rain or acid snow. In some parts of the United States, especially the Northeast, acid rain has resulted in lakes and streams becoming acidic, resulting in conditions which are harmful to aquatic life. The problems associated with acid rain are lessened if limestone is present, since it is alkaline and neutralizes the acidity of the water. Many Canadians who rely on Lake Water are effected by high acidity levels.

Drinking higher alkaline water is an advantage because the vast majority of people in North America are overly acidic. Foods like: meat, cheese, dairy, bread, soda, sugar & candy create a very acidic environment. Some people don’t believe that higher alkalinity water matters because our bodies have “pH buffers” which boost our pH to keep it in the healthy range near 7.36. With most water ionizers you can select between 8.0, 9.0 or 9.5 pH. Some water ionizers can produce higher alkalinity water (up to 11.0 pH) but in most cases 9.5 is the highest alkaline setting that you should drink. People who are having health challenges are advised to start at pH 8.0 (10 times more alkaline then neutral) and then work their way up to 9.0 over a few weeks or months.

During the electrolysis process which is electrochemical, water is split by an electrical current. (Most water ionizers use solid Titanium plates which are dipped in Platinum and then electrically energised.) The water goes into the elctrolysis chamber and then the water drawn to the anode is acidic while the water drawn to the cathode is alkaline. Water ionizers work by simply siphoning off the water near the cathode. This contains greatly increased levels of hydroxide (OH-) and has a higher alkalinity. Depending on which setting on the machine you choose, a different amount of electricity is sent to the plates which affects the pH level of the resulting water.

Interesting fact, as the pH scale goes to 14, if you are drinking pH 9.5 water, the acidic run-off water will have a pH of 4.5 (14-9.5), or if you are drinking 8.0 water, then the run-off will be 6.

Detriments of Tap Water

There has been increased awareness in the last decade about our tap water. Perhaps you’ve seen the film Erin Brokovich where Julia Roberts busts huge corporations that are dumping millions of tons of deadly toxins into our water while corrupt Washington bureaucrats look the other way. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) detected “carcinogenic chemical” (Hexavalent Chromium-6) in 89% of tap water across the U.S. Another study showed that “drinking chlorinated water for 15 years or more was conducive to a high rate of colon cancer.” The ‘Government Health Establishment’ has set no safe level or legal standard for chlorine in drinking water. Heavy metals like arsenic and lead come through old water pipes in many cities. In the last few years an average of 73,000 Americans per year were infected from e.Coli in their tap water.
