FCCS Invites Applications from UBC Okanagan Graduate Students for the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre Residency
The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies offers two graduate student or postdoctoral student residencies. For 8 – 10 months, the awardees live in one of two self-contained, one- or two-bedroom apartments in this heritage home located on 8 acres of wild land in the lower Mission area of Kelowna, within the boundaries of a newly acquired Regional District of the Central Okanagan Park. This residency is applied for and is competitive. Students pay a highly subsidized monthly rent: utilities and Internet are included (see below for rates.)
Individuals who have applied for graduate work at UBC Okanagan and who are interested in becoming a resident should write a letter of application and send it to email@example.com by April 30th of each year. The application should be a letter of interest outlining why the student would like to be in residence and what plans the student might have to contribute to the place (we have a blog for photos, art or writing; students could commit to hosting a public event during their residency; students could create eco art for the property; or students can propose any creative or interesting contribution to FCCS’s EcoCultures research area.)
The letters are assessed and ranked based on the quality and originality of proposed contributions to the unique ecological and cultural nature of the site and to current activity in the EcoCultures research group, as well as evidence of the applicant’s past scholarly, artistic, professional and/ or relevant activities (such as conservation or environmental work). The applicants must be UBC Okanagan graduate students or postdoctoral fellows with a minimum of 10 months left in their program or term at UBC Okanagan. Preference is given to applicants in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, but students from other Faculties will be considered.
Adjudication Process: Application letters are reviewed and ranked by the FCCS Graduate Admissions and Scholarship Committee which will make a recommendation and provide a ranked list of acceptable applicants to the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in FCCS who will make the award in early summer. If an applicant declines the fellowship, the fellowship will be offered to the next applicant on the list of recommended applicants
