Assessment

I sincerely hope that I have met all the requirements for the quiz as it was very labour intensive. I wanted to start days before as John suggested but work was just so demanding and I was ill prior to this period. I began two days ago and found that if I had an hour of each day to work without being tired I would be able to do a longer exam in a shorter time. I am beginning to feel more comfortable with Moodle and was able to do some additional procedures today. Like upload images. I am really proud of my picture question.

I will revisit it tomorrow to see how the quiz looks and if all the pre-programmed feedback works. It will be certainly less of hassle to mark those many essay scripts. As with all the projects I have done so far, I feel we have to work on budgeting time to get things working properly. I feel with this exposure it will take about 30 minutes to set up 10 multiple choice items. I really enjoyed doing the four. I am still a bit hazy on the kind of feedback to setup for the essay questions. One of the immediate advantages of using this auto-assessed medium is the level of transparency and the opportunity to do some dioagnostic teaching. The learner has the opportunity to review the material  before attempting the quiz after a failed attempt. I really like that feature.

I will reflect some more after I have done some more readings.

Reflection after Quiz Testing

I have really struggled to be on task with these assignments. I read the assignment again even after I thought I had met the March 7 deadline. I tested my site and found out that text of  two of my short answer questions were not showing up at all.

Even after I thought I was really complete (test items visible) I had to spend another 3 hours working on the assessment. It was not the actual programming of the Moodle features that accounted for the long times spent on updates, but it was really the sluggishness of the computer. Apparently it seems that if many persons are on the Moodle site then it causes the system to be slow.

Reflection after setting up Asynchronous Communication and Assessment

I seem to have done two actual areas but these more recent ones are the ones I am reflecting done March 16, 2010. These included directing students to participate in a discussion following a synchronous activity. As I explored what Moodle has to offer my perceptions of online learning is changing.  I have been arguing that the affective domain is minimised but I have now realized with the creation of these activities that reflections could be so much more meaningful and authentic as students will be reflecting their own with more immediacy. In a synchronous environment the students tend to try to structure their reflections in a stilted kind of way because they feel that writing is so permanent and can be used against them. I think I have been getting truer reflections than I do when they do face to face. I am also appreciating the wiki because it tells me who has been contributing through email correspondence.

I am also grateful for the summary spaces that can display summative assessment tasks which students can see and be reminded of each time they go to the site.
