Directed Studies Opportunity for January 2013: co-creating sustainable global cities

Hi all:
I am looking for an MBA student who might be interested in doing a Directed Study with me next term (starting January) on the topic of co-creating sustainable cities.  I am fairly open as to the direction this DS might take so we can “co-create” the learning outcomes and deliverables together.  Murali assures me that some of you have the flexibility to do Directed Study.

As part of my role as Chair of the Campus-City Collaborative, (the six post secondary institutions in Vancouver + City of Vancouver with a goal of helping the City achieve its greenest city targets) I am involved with an organization called the World Class Cities Partnership (WCCP).  http://nuweb9.neu.edu/wccp/

The WCCP brings together civic, business and academic leaders from cities spanning the globe – Barcelona, Boston, Dublin, Guadalajara, Haifa, Hamburg, Lisbon, Lyon, and Vancouver – for the purpose of creating sustainable social change through policy research, and development and implementation of best practice solutions to common challenges.

This year’s policy research topic is Co-Creating Sustainable Cities– analyzing methods of engagement and data sources to address such urban processes as crowd sourcing, alternative financing, development proposals, and municipal budgeting in the effort to make cities more sustainable and economically successful. City officials around the world increasingly recognize the power and potential of opening processes traditionally thought of as the responsibility of city governments to the public.

The WCCP hub is at North Eastern University in Boston.  This term a practicum experience has been running that provides an opportunity for students to work on a client project, gain real-world experience, engage in primary data collection, apply research methods to policy issues, and develop relationships with local and global WCCP participants.

Next term a number of the WCCP member cities’ post secondary institutions are looking to mount directed studies as well — so we will network the students working on various WCCP projects.  I can send more info if you are interested.

Please email me at moura.quayle@sauder.ubc.ca.

All the best,

Moura
