Propelling Social Ventures Conference- March 14-15, 2013

The Propelling Social Ventures Conference 2013-Vancouver Convention Centre

Social ventures are companies or organizations that seek to create measurable social and environmental impact through a business and revenue model. This combination creates long lasting social or environmental impact that is achieved in a financially sustainable way.  Through the social venture model, the business sector plays an important role in creating social and environmental benefit for society.

Around the world social ventures are demonstrating the impact and social innovation that can be created through business models. But there is still a lot of untapped potential. We’ve seen what social ventures can achieve; now we want to see more social ventures creating impact.

Propelling Social Ventures 2013 will bring together social entrepreneurs, the business community and social innovators to explore how various stakeholders can contribute to more social venture activity in British Columbia, Canada, and beyond. The topics explored will include:

  • What are the various models for creating impact through business?
  • Examples of successful social ventures and the factors that led to their success
  • The role of incubator and accelerator models in supporting social ventures
  • What support do the entrepreneurs really need?
  • How can students and professionals engage with social ventures?
  • What are the models for scaling social ventures and their impact?
  • How can the business community engage with social ventures?

Propelling Social Ventures 2013 will also feature:

  • Keynote speakers including leading North American social innovators and funders of social innovation
  • A student internship pitch competition where students will compete for one of 7 internships at the CCS Innovation Hub
  • An innovation jam where conference participants will have the opportunity to actively engage and innovate

The first annual Propelling Social Ventures 2013 Conference is brought to you by the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub. As part of the ISIS Research Center at the Sauder School of Business at UBC, the CCS Innovation Hub is a newly launched accelerator program for promising social ventures in BC. The Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub offers a dynamic space to accelerate social venture growth by bringing together university resources, access to new networks, peer learning, and improved investment readiness. The Innovation Hub is defined by its passionate community and collaborative environment.

The Manulife: Entry Into Asia Challenge is a one-time only event designed for undergraduate and graduate university business students from across Canada to develop business plans focused on Asia.

Created in partnership with the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, the competition has a dual focus:

• The competition provides undergraduate and graduate business students from across Canada the opportunity to develop a business plan for a small and/or medium-sized enterprise (SME)
• The competition focuses on the creation of a business plan for international expansion to any country in Asia.

Congratulations to all of you for completing the business plan presentations and entering into a well-deserved break.

With the MBA Games, and a new academic period beginning in January, you will be busy. We strongly encourage you to make the time to get your resume revisions done and back to Rodrigo/Mary in the next 2 weeks. Rodrigo is in the office next week and they will both be around on the 2-4th. Ideally, by January 7th, all resumes are done and we have a resume book for your class to show to our contacts.

Marketing the resume book is contingent on all of you getting your resume done. So, grab some egg nog, put on some holiday tunes, cuddle up with your laptop, and get working on that resume. Thanks all.
