Module outlines for BAEN 542 & BAEN 545 for P4 now available online

Briefing note on BAEN 542 Prototyping and BAEN 545 Qualitative Research Models from Paul Cubbon

Any questions: please contact: paul.cubbon@sauder.ubc.ca

These two course outlines are now available for Period 4 online. These two half-module courses are designed to be taken in parallel to make up 1.5 credits, but if you only want to take one of them you may do so. Given that these are short courses, and recognizing that you will have just returned from global immersion, there is no significant preparation. However, you are expected to attend all classes and be prepared to the extent needed to participate actively.

Both courses are intended to offer you a change of pace from conventional courses, and are “learning by doing” applied classes. There are no text books or reading packs, but there are some online resources, and these will be added to on an optional, self-customized basis to allow you to develop your learning interests.

The Qualitative Research course is intended to help you build on your learning with Dale in Market Research, on your experiences in Project 2 in Fall, and the learning that many of you have been having in the last month in BAEN 506 Technology Entrepreneurship and/or Brand Management. In all of these courses you have been required to design questionnaires and conduct interviews with only limited guidance. And you have found out how hard it is to do this well and to get useful results.

This course will drill down deeper on “how” and also cover some additional techniques that can provide actionable insights, especially in the early stage of a venture or problem investigation. You will have opportunities to customize your work to connect it to other projects that you are already working on, or to apply the concepts and tools to something new. The projects will, naturally, require some time, but the intention is that they do not need to be heavily time-consuming.

The Prototyping course was designed with the BAEN 506-507 Technology Entrepreneurship and BINV track students in mind, but anyone who is interested can take it.

  • Books – the 2 books listed are optional, and certainly not required (Copies of both will be available in class for people to view).
  • Website – preliminary material up by Mon Feb 11th, with major revision posted by Mon Feb 25th.
  • No reading costs, no lab fees. Prep work and limited readings –  students can expect ~3-8 hours to work on the two projects, depending on complexity of their chosen topics for Projects 1 and Projects 2.

B-Clinic Marketplace Reminder

This is just a reminder that the B-Clinic Marketplace is Wednesday, January 30 from 6:30pm to 9:00 pm.

In total there are eight fantastic business challenges that will be presented by organization leaders. Not only is this a great chance to find out about B-Clinic projects but also an opportunity for some networking with  organizations in Vancouver’s business community. For example, check out this project from Del Mar Pharmaceuticals:

Del Mar Pharmaceuticals is looking for student(s) to develop a case study for a drug marketing program in China. Students would work directly with the CEO to conduct market, financial, and historical research on repositioning a pharmaceutical product in China.

Not only is this a great opportunity to gain some valuable hands-on experience, but B-Clinic projects also count for class credit. For more information, visit bclinic.sauder.ubc.ca. To register for the marketplace event, follow the link below.

Inclusion in Resume Books

As part of our marketing efforts, we will be sending “resume books” (PDF collections of resumes) to selected contacts and partners as part of internship development and overall employment branding for your cohort and the school. This activity helps to market you specifically as well as other students in your Track, as well as the whole cohort, and of course, the whole program.

When you registered on COOL, you agreed to have your default resume viewable by employers who have been given access to the resume database. We assume that the above, additional marketing activities are acceptable to you.

If, for privacy reasons, you do not want your resume to be included in these kinds of activities, or you would like to pair down your contact information, please contact your career manager via email by EOB Tuesday, January 29th.

Resume Completion

For those of you who have not yet completed your resumes, please do your best to get your revisions done over the next few days. We know that you have a lot on your plates right now. However, we do not want you or your fellow classmates to miss any opportunities for marketing, including for Global Immersion. Your career managers are reaching out individually to you to expedite things.

Perfect is not important at this stage. Get your resume done and we can help you revise it if needed after Global Immersion. With the business development team, we will be sending out resumes starting next week for key partners. Thank you for your cooperation.

Register online on here

The B-Clinic Marketplace, presented in the 9th Floor penthouse of the Henry Angus building, is the forum that matches organizations from the business community with Sauder MBA and ECM students. Organizations with unique business opportunities will present a five minute pitch including a description of their business and its specific challenge(s). A short Q&A session will follow. Once presentations are complete, students will have an opportunity to interact further with the speakers, exchanging questions and gaining additional insight as needed.

To view a profile of these organizations, please visit the B-Clinic website at bclinic.sauder.ubc.ca.

Following the Marketplace, interested students can upload their resume to the B-Clinic website and apply for any of the available projects. Listen. Ask. Choose. Apply. It’s that easy!
