Clean Capital Conference

The Clean Capital Conference has been moved to January 30th. We will be sponsoring attendance for a few students who have a real, demonstrated interested in this space. If you would like to attend, please send an email to me, Ian, with:

  • Your expression of interest
  • Why do you want to attend this conference? How does it relate to your professional interests?
  • How do you specifically plan on taking advantage of this opportunity?

I will respond once I have received those expressions of interest.

Group Presentation Coaching & Feedback Sessions Available

Regarding presentation coaching and feedback, we have arranged for some support for your upcoming presentations.

1. If you have an upcoming group presentation and would like to benefit from expert feedback, we have arranged with the Canaccord Learning Commons for an opportunity to receive a consultative critique of your presentation approach, design and delivery. 40 and 60 minutes time slots are available.

  • 40 Minute: For those groups who are not ready for a dry run of their presentation. Focus will be on constructing a storyline that achieves the goal of your presentation as well as a basic critique of delivery. (A good option earlier rather than later)
  • 60 Minute: For those groups who are ready by the appointment date to do a dry run of their presentation. Feedback / advice will be given on storyline construction, where you need to fill holes in your argument, and delivery.

2. Additionally, we are arranging to have that same person attend your in-class presentations. He will collect and provide feedback on a group by group basis.

Both the consultative-style sessions and in-class presence will be delivered/offered by Alex Monegro, Student Development Manager of the CLC. Alex is very experienced with delivering and coaching presentations for high pressure situations. He was part of the 1st place team for the National Investment Banking Conference among others, participated in the SCMP program, created presentation decks at a consulting firm, and has trained numerous case competition trainers and acted as a case competition coach for national conferences.

For the group coaching / feedback sessions, dates are available for:

  • Monday May 6th: 10-12, 12-2, 2-4
  • Tues May 7th: 12-2pm
  • Wed May 8th: 10-12, 2-4
  • Friday May 10th:  all day
  • Mon May 13th: 10-12, 12-2pm, 2-4
  • Wed May 15th: 10-12, 12-2, 2-4
  • Exam week: Once the schedule is finalized, we will determine if there are potential time slots.

If you group is interested, please select one representative from the team to email Carly with your day/time slot preferences and whether your group would like a 40 or 60 minute session. If you think you are interested, but are not certain about when you would like to do it, please email Carly to indicate your interest. This will help us gauge demand.

ePortfolio

Hello all,

I have a two follow-ups on the ePortfolio.

  • In a previous post, I had asked you to change your privacy settings in your portfolio. However, I notice that many portfolios are still not viewable. If you have not done so already, could you please navigate to Dashboard > Settings > Reading and change the setting to: “I would like my site to be visible only to Registered network users.” This will allow staff and faculty with CWL’s to view your posts.
  • At present, there are only 4 students who have published their posts to the ubcmbasmakeadifference (aggregator) site. When you create a post, if you feel that it is something you are proud of and you want to showcase, then you need to send that post to ubcmbasmakeadifference. To do so, on the top right of your “Add New Post” page (where you write your post), under the “Publish” section, please click the area directly under “Publish Immediately” – there you will have the option of also publishing your post to an external site, in this case ubcmbasmakeadifference.
  • At present, ubcmbasmakeadifference is viewable only by people within the UBC network. Once we have enough strong examples of work, we will then make it public.

If you are having difficulty, or have questions, please get in touch with myself, Rodrigo or Carly and we will be pleased to assist you.

Cover Letters and Application Bundles

We heard from a student that there were rumours about the team pulling internship applications and not necessarily notifying the impacted students about this. As this is important, I wanted to clarify our procedures.

When you apply several days before a deadline, the team has an opportunity to both review your application material and provide feedback, which provides you the opportunity to make the necessary edits and re-submit your application. The only situation in which we would pull an application is when:

  • You have made an embarrassing or fatal error in your material (addressee, formatting etc.)
  • And either you haven’t responded to our request to fix the material by the deadline OR there isn’t sufficient time to make edits because you applied the night before the bundle is due.

If the above occurred, we would definitely notify you that your application was pulled. We hope this clarifies things. Please let us know if you have questions on the above.

ePortfolio and Privacy Settings

As you have been asked to post to your ePortfolio for Global Immersion, I wanted to provide guidance on Privacy Settings.

The intent for the ePortfolio is for the work you post there to be public and therefore part of your professional identity. You can either choose to do that now, or elect for more privacy until you have had some feedback on your work. Please do the following:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy
  2. Read the Options available
  3. Select either “
If you have any questions on this, please let us know.

Important ePortfolio Instructions

Regarding your eportfolio, thank you for your patience as we sorted out back-end technicalities. This post provides important, updated instructions and resources in order for you to fully enable your eportfolio. Please take a few minutes to follow these steps. To begin, please navigate to http://learningcommons.sauder.ubc.ca/learn/portfolio/ . Here are the components in sequence:

  1. Please read Step 1 Portfolios and the MBA Curriculum.
  2. Most of you have already set-up a portfolio. Have you updated your portfolio categories?  (The portfolio template was updated recently to include the full menu of categories [Interests & Passions, Purpose & Direction, Skills, Competencies]).  If you already had a portfolio and have followed the above, step. please skip to point 4 below.
  3. If you don’t have a portfolio, are you registered for UBC blogs? Also, create your portfolio here.
  4. Do you have a blog? Create your blog.
  5. Have you added yourself to the aggregators? (and, is your portfolio/blog included in the blogroll?)
  6. Do you know how to submit artifacts/posts to the aggregator?
  7. Have you looked at additional resources?
    • Introduction to WordPressChoosing Artifacts, and Putting it all Together (which shows you how to send a post to the aggregator site).
    • There are also FAQs

Additional points:

  • Once the steps above are completed, we will need to individually enable syncing between your portfolio and the aggregator.
  • Any submissions you make to the aggregator will be put in moderating mode to be reviewed by your career manager before being pushed live ubcmbasmakeadifference
  • We will not enable full public access to ubcmbasmakeadifference until we have some content to share.

I will be communicating more tips as well as clarifications and updates going forward. We are looking forward to seeing your portfolios develop and to the aggregator showcasing your ideas and talent.

Inclusion in Resume Books

As part of our marketing efforts, we will be sending “resume books” (PDF collections of resumes) to selected contacts and partners as part of internship development and overall employment branding for your cohort and the school. This activity helps to market you specifically as well as other students in your Track, as well as the whole cohort, and of course, the whole program.

When you registered on COOL, you agreed to have your default resume viewable by employers who have been given access to the resume database. We assume that the above, additional marketing activities are acceptable to you.

If, for privacy reasons, you do not want your resume to be included in these kinds of activities, or you would like to pair down your contact information, please contact your career manager via email by EOB Tuesday, January 29th.

Resume Completion

For those of you who have not yet completed your resumes, please do your best to get your revisions done over the next few days. We know that you have a lot on your plates right now. However, we do not want you or your fellow classmates to miss any opportunities for marketing, including for Global Immersion. Your career managers are reaching out individually to you to expedite things.

Perfect is not important at this stage. Get your resume done and we can help you revise it if needed after Global Immersion. With the business development team, we will be sending out resumes starting next week for key partners. Thank you for your cooperation.

Internship Posting Deadlines During Holiday – Heads-up

We hope you are enjoying a well-deserved break. There are a number of internship postings that close during the holiday and shortly after. Given the break, travel schedules, our closed office next week and the MBA Games, we wanted to highlight this fact. The deadlines and companies are:

  • Dec. 24th (3 postings – Amazon.com)
  • Dec. 31st (2 postings – including IBM Extreme Blue)
  • Jan. 3rd (5 postings – CIBC)
  • Jan. 6th (1 posting – ScotiaBank)
  • Jan. 7th (2 postings – TD Securities, National Bank)
  • Jan. 8th (2 postings – RBC)
  • Jan. 9th (4 postings – Accenture, HSBC, ScotiaBank)
  • Jan. 12th (4 postings – Procter & Gamble)
  • etc.

Postings in December / January tend to be dominated by the larger corporations with formal internship processes. If these targets are of interest to you, you need to be on top of these deadlines.
