MBAN Society Information & Elections

Hi all,

I hope you had a great first week of classes! As we discussed during Opening Week, the MBAN Society (MBANS) is the voice of MBAN students in academic and administrative matters and regularly liaises between the class, instructors, the business community, and the Robert H. Lee Graduate School. The goal of these executives is to represent your student body and the MBAN degree, and to enhance the MBAN experience academically, socially, and professionally through society-led initiatives. As the first MBAN Society, you will be responsible for registering the Society with the UBC Graduate Student Society.

While being a part of the MBANS executive requires particular dedication to your cohort and the program, both in terms of time and effort, it is most certainly a mutually-beneficial experience. As a student leader, you will be engaged in work that builds skills integral to your success in the workplace. Developing a project and budget, managing a team, organizing events, and contributing to a positive organizational culture, are just a few of the responsibilities you will undertake. Becoming a member of the MBANS executive team is a great opportunity for you to collaborate with the School and work towards long term program improvement to leave a positive legacy for future cohorts.

View the position descriptions below. Each person can only run for 1 position. While each executive member must carry out their core responsibilities, each year the team has significant flexibility in molding the Society to the needs of their cohort and exercising discretion on what initiatives will best serve their classmates and the MBAN program.

Election Process

If you are interested in being considered for one of the positions, please follow these steps:

  1. Read through the material posted for the position you are interested in running for (above). Ensure you understand the commitment that comes with the role and that you are comfortable with taking on this additional work for the full duration of the program. Please contact us at askmban@sauder.ubc.ca if you have any questions about the positions or commitment.
  2. Once you have decided that you wish to be considered for a particular position, let your classmates know!
  3. If you are nominated by a classmate, you will be contacted on Friday, September 15th and asked to accept the nomination. If you are nominated for a position and you do not wish to run for it, thank your classmate/s for considering you, then politely decline and explain your reasons for doing so. If you would like to nominate yourself for a position, you are also welcome to do so.
  4. To ensure all nominees are serious about participating in the election, you will be required to submit a 500-word letter of intent submitted to askmban@sauder.ubc.ca addressing the following:
  • Why you want to take on the role
  • What makes you the best person for the position
  • How you will represent your class, the MBAN program, and the Sauder School of Business

Any nominees who do not submit their letter by the deadline will be withdrawn from the election process.

  1. Once confirmed, candidates will be advised to prepare a short speech (3-5 minutes, based on the letter of intent) to present in front of the class. The MBAN class will then vote on their preferred candidates for each of the five positions and the results will be announced on the Program Site after the votes have been counted.

Please note that in the event of a tie, students may be required to vote again or the possibility of a shared position discussed.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at askmban@sauder.ubc.ca

Have a wonderful weekend!

Elisabeth
