Opening Week Follow-Up

Hi all,

Thanks for an AMAZING 4 days of Opening Week! I speak for the whole team when I say that we are so excited about your cohort!

A few follow-up items from Opening Week:

  • Check out the new Resources tab on the Program Site! Here you will find the library resources, case methodology slides, and math review slides covered during Opening Week as well as other important information about UBC Sauder logo usage and student presentation templates. You will also find your class roster at the top of the Resources page. Be sure to check out the education, latest work experience, and interests of your fellow classmates!
  • Time is running out! Help the Career Centre get to know you better by completing the MBAN coaching intake questionnaire. Each student must complete the questionnaire by TONIGHT, Friday Sept. 1st by 11:59pm. If you haven’t already completed the questionnaire, submit your responses here.
  • Interested in what clubs there are on campus? The Main Event is taking place on Tuesday, Sept 5th from 1-4:30pm right outside Sauder along Main Mall. Grab some pizza after the math session and check out the booths if you are interested. Be sure to make it back in time for BABS 506 at 2pm. More details here.
  • There will be a few PhD students in a couple of your classes this year. Please make them feel welcome & introduce yourself.
  • UBC Alumni Email – The @alumni.ubc.ca email for students is a forwarding service that you link to your personal email account. Sign up here if you are interested.
  • Need to print? Load money here.
  • Breakout Rooms – book them here.

Enjoy your long weekend & we’ll see you on Tuesday!

See you at the Gala Dinner!

A Few Reminders

Hi all,

Only 4 DAYS until Opening Week begins! A few reminders:

  • Give yourself extra time to get to campus for Monday morning as there is construction on University Boulevard heading west. All buses affected by construction will be rerouted so you will be able to make it to campus, but it is wise to give yourself some extra time.
  • As you can see from the Opening Week Schedule, you will have your professional headshots taken on Wednesday. Here are a few tips from the photographer:
    • When deciding what to wear, think about who will be looking at your image. The image will represent who you are and your first impression.
    • Solid colours tend to photograph better than big bold patterns.
    • Try to stay away from heavy contrasts such as a black suit and white shirt.
    • Long sleeves tend to photograph better than short sleeves.
    • If you wear make-up, make sure it is natural.
  • You will have your first Math Review session during the Thursday of Opening Week. We will be holding a follow-up Math Review session on the first day of classes, Sept. 5th from 11am-1pm in David Lam 125. We will then provide you with a pizza lunch before the start of your first class, BABS 506 – Analyzing and Modeling Uncertainty at 2pm.
  • Remember to take the time to review your Period 1 course outlines before the start of classes so you know what to expect and can complete any necessary pre-readings. An online copy of Introduction to Operations Research used in BAMS 506 can be found here.

We can’t wait to have you here on campus and if you have any questions before then, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at askmban@sauder.ubc.ca.

Best wishes,

Elisabeth Chin

Opening Week To Do’s

Hi all,

We are looking forward to welcoming you to the official start of your MBAN program in only 11 days! There are a couple of additional items for you to do before Opening Week:

For Monday, Aug 28th: Read the following 3 key Academic Regulations, which will be discussed in detail on the first day of Opening Week – Academic Misconduct / Academic Standing & Grading Practices / Professionalism, Attendance & Behaviour. This should take around 15 minutes to complete.

For Thursday, Aug 31st: Read the Southwest Airlines Case. As you read the case consider: As the decision-maker, what would you do and why? Make some personal notes to aid class discussion. If you would like to have a hard copy, please print it before you come. Otherwise, you are welcome to refer to the case on your laptop. This should take around 30 minutes to complete.

You will note the dress code on the Opening Week Schedule. Please refer to the Guide on Professional Business Attire for guidelines on what constitutes business formal, business casual, and casual wear.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at askmban@sauder.ubc.ca if you have any questions before Opening Week.

Best wishes,

Elisabeth Chin
