The key documents to understand the 2021 Full-time UBC MBA program are the

Hard copies of these documents are provided on Opening Week.

Program Overview

A snapshot of the UBC MBA Program:

  • August 26 - 30, 2019: all students attend the mandatory UBC MBA orientation programming.
  • September - December 2019: all students in the UBC MBA program take exactly the same foundational courses.
  • January - April 2020: students begin to specialize in their career tracks while still taking some integrated and thematic courses together.
  • May - August 2020: all students complete the Experiential Learning courses (an internship, entrepreneurial project, or industry project).
  • September - December 2020: all students take mainly elective courses and complete a few final integrated and thematic courses together.
  • May 2021: Graduation!

The structure and components of the UBC MBA program are described using a few terms that students should become familiar with:

  • Foundation Courses: courses covering the basic business and management subjects, required for all students to take.
  • Business Strategy Integration Courses: courses which integrate across disciplines to develop your managerial decision-making skills, required for all students to take.
  • Thematic Courses: courses covering five critical business skills that form the DNA of the UBC MBA program, required for all students to take.
  • Track Courses: if you choose to take a track you will have a certain number of courses that are required in order to earn the track designation on your transcript.
  • Elective Courses: all other courses offered in the program - each student chooses their own mix of courses to make up the remaining credits in the program.
  • Period is equivalent to half a Term and is 6 weeks long (5 weeks of instruction, 1 week for evaluation). The MBA program is made up of 7 Periods that run from September 2019 until December 2020.
  • course is scheduled within a Period and is worth 1.5 credits. MBA students are typically registered in 4-5 courses per Period.

Courses will cover a variety of key subject areas. Not only will students learn the language of business, but they will develop the skills to understand business problems, make managerial decisions, and communicate solutions, both as individuals and as part of a team.

In addition to regular courses, the program also includes Career and Professional Development (CPD) programming:

  • Working with the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre and a career coach, students will gain valuable career and professional development skills through a curriculum that includes self-assessment, research techniques, resume and cover-letter writing, interviewing, and networking. CPD will help students develop and polish professional skills that will serve them for the duration of their careers.

Schedules

Program Schedule:

Exam Schedule:

Other cohort / program schedules: FT MBA 2020, PMBA 2020, PMBA 2021, IMBA 2020, IMBA 2021

Course Pre-requisites: As students progress through the program, some courses will have pre-requisites. A pre-requisite is a course that has content that is integral for students to learn prior to taking the listed course. For example, in order to take some of the more advanced Finance courses, students need to have a good foundation in certain Finance content. Consequently many of the advanced Finance courses will have pre-reqs, which will be listed on the program schedule and the course record on the SSC.

Timetable - from the end of August onwards students will be able to view their class timetables on the Student Service Centre: click on Course Schedule > Registration > Timetable. Click on the Timetable link to see an updated timetable, and also a button that allows students to download their class timetable as an iCal file that can then be imported into most calendaring software: SSC screenshot

NOTES:

  • Students are required to attend all classes and mandatory career professional development sessions during each Period.
  • Dates for workshops, info sessions, make-up classes, and exams can change with limited notice. As such, it is expected that students do not book any travel to occur until after each Period's exam week is completely finished.
  • Exam schedules are subject to change so students are not to book any travel, appointments, interviews, etc. during exam week so time is reserved in case of emergency modifications.

Grade Requirements and Transcripts

Grade Requirements: The UBC MBA program has strict grading requirements for all courses, which may differ from what you are used to from your previous degree(s). Students must familiarize themselves with these grading requirements prior to the start of the MBA to understand the differences.

  • As an example, students are only permitted a limited number of "failed" (59% and below) and/or "minimal pass" (60-67%) grades in the MBA degree. If you exceed this limit, you will be withdrawn from the program.

To find out more about MBA program policies, please visit the Academic Regulations page.

Transcripts (SSC): UBC transcripts can be ordered via the Student Service Centre (SSC) and have it mailed directly or pick it up at Brock Hall.

Career Track & Degree Progress

As students progress through the UBC MBA Program they will either build their own custom track or choose one of three specialized career tracks designed to equip them with the advanced business skills they will need to build a successful career in today’s global economy. A faculty member (track champion) leads each track.

  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship Track - Track Champion: Paul Cubbon
  • Finance  Track - Track Champion: Hernan Ortiz-Molina
  • Product & Service Management Track - Track Champion: Tim Silk
  • Custom Track - no specific track champion - please discuss with your Career Manager

Students will declare their tracks in Period 3 (January 2020), which is when students begin to take track-required courses.

Requirements for each track are listed on the Track Worksheets which can be found below. The Track Worksheets provide an outline of the required courses, elective courses associated with each track, and the number of credits required for each period. Students may refer to the Track Worksheets as a reference guide. They are not required to be submitted, but can be used for planning and advising purposes.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

The RHL is pleased to offer Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) for some of your foundation courses. Peer Assisted Study Sessions are highly interactive, 60-90 minute, small group sessions (3-12 people) that help students develop deeper knowledge of course content and practice effective, discipline-specific study strategies.

Sessions are led by year-two MBA students and are planned in consultation with course instructors and TA’s. Content is typically based on the previous week’s lecture material, but is flexible based on attendees’ needs.

Check your Canvas course sites for session times and topics, and to register for upcoming sessions.
