Securing accommodation near the start of the program (at the end of August) can be difficult. As the MM program runs until June next year and is longer than one winter session at UBC (Sept-April) students are recommended to apply for year-round housing. If you apply for Winter Session only you will compete with all undergraduate students who have priority for this group.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Notes:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>You may find when you apply for residence on campus that you are placed on a wait list. As the contract length and the age of student living in this type of housing does not fit with the UBC MM Program schedule and student body, the<strong> following September - April residences are NOT recommended for UBC MM students:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Totem Park<\/li>\n<li>Place Vanier<\/li>\n<li>Ritsumeikan-UBC House<\/li>\n<li>Walter Gage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Graduate Student Colleges (year-round)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UBC has two residential graduate colleges that offer accommodation dedicated to graduate students, visiting scholars, and postdocs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencollege.ubc.ca\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/stjohns.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. John's College<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Alternative On-Campus Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.housing.ubc.ca\/other-housing\/more-campus-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alternative housing options<\/a> located on campus, but not operated by UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #78be00;\"><strong>OFF CAMPUS<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Living off campus is a great option for opening up to experiences outside of UBC. There are several communities in the area that have a number of housing options such as in-house suites, apartments, and shared accommodation. Transportation to and from the campus is easy if you find somewhere within a 1\/2 hour commute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Selecting your neighborhood: <\/strong>Neighborhood cultures, living costs and transit routes are important factors when looking for housing.\u00a0Vancouver is in general a safe city to live in but, as in any big city, you need to be aware of your surroundings and select accommodations and a location you are comfortable with. The inspection should be done with your landlord. Document and photograph any visible property damage. Use the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca\/en\/rental-housing\/i-am-renting\/inspections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Initial Inspection Worksheet Primer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/192.197.69.106\/en\/co\/reho\/yogureho\/salewo\/salewo_005.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Initial Inspection Worksheet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #78be00;\"><strong>BEWARE OF SCAMS<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>As you may know, Vancouver has a very competitive housing market. While our students are typically able to find appropriate accommodations on- or off-campus and have rarely come across scams, it is important to be aware that they do exist.<\/p>\n<p>Some warning signs of rental scams according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/financial-consumer-agency\/services\/renting-first-apartment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Financial Consumer Agency of Canada<\/a>, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The monthly rent is much less than the current market rate<\/li>\n<li>You're asked to leave a deposit without any formal rental agreement or lease in place<\/li>\n<li>You're asked to send a security deposit to a landlord outside the country<\/li>\n<li>You're offered a unit but no one does a background check on you<\/li>\n<li>When you ask about the apartment, you get an email that sends you to a website asking for personal or financial information<\/li>\n<li>Ads that show pictures of the outside of the property only, or pictures that don't match the actual property<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #78be00;\"><strong>\u00a0COMMERCIAL RENTAL SERVICES<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>For a fee, these services will provide you with a list of vacancies that meet your criteria. These are often advertised in the rental listings section of newspapers. They can be helpful if you need to save time, but there is a charge for the service.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>NOTE: <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>These sites\/groups are provided as a resource to students. There are only a few options available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/suitesatubc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Suites at UBC<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencollege.ubc.ca\/guest-accommodations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/stjohns.ubc.ca\/home\/guest-and-meeting-room\/guest-accommodation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. John's College<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#medical-insurance-health-care-2\" >Medical Insurance &amp; Health Care<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"medical-insurance-health-care-2\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<h5><strong>NOTE: All UBC students are required to have both basic and extended health insurance.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Find out what kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/health\/health-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Insurance<\/a> you need and how to enrol.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #78be00;\">BC MEDICAL SERVICES PLAN (MSP)<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Everyone living in British Columbia for more than six months is required to enroll in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/health\/health-drug-coverage\/msp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)<\/a>, (except students with existing coverage from another Canadian province or territory).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/health\/health-drug-coverage\/msp\/bc-residents\/eligibility-and-enrolment\/how-to-enrol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>apply for MSP<\/strong><\/a> as soon as you arrive in British Columbia.<\/li>\n<li>There is a 3 month waiting period before MSP coverage will start so you must ensure you have basic health insurance for those first 3 months in British Columbia.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Canadian citizens or permanent residents<\/strong> are advised to join the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/health\/health-insurance\/global-campus-health-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Campus Health Plan<\/a>\u00a0during that three-month MSP waiting period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International students:<\/strong> Are automatically covered by <a href=\"https:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/health\/health-insurance\/health-insurance-details-international\/imed-temporary-health-insurance-international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iMed<\/a>.
