We acknowledge this fact often because it is an important aspect of UBC\u2019s history and present relations with Indigenous Peoples. Both UBC and Canada have a long and complicated history of colonialism and Indigenous relations. In preparation for your arrival at UBC, we encourage you to learn more about UBC and Canada\u2019s historical and present relationship with Indigenous peoples and communities, and to explore the many resources available online and on campus. We expect that you will be fully settled before the start of Opening Week.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#on-campus-housing-2\" >On-campus Housing<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"on-campus-housing-2\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p><strong>Apply as soon as you have been admitted to UBC<\/strong>. This will ensure you\u2019re not held responsible for damage that may already exist. Do the inspection with your landlord and make sure to document and photograph any visible property damage. Use the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca\/en\/rental-housing\/i-am-renting\/inspections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Initial Inspection Worksheet Primer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cmhc-schl.gc.ca\/sf\/project\/cmhc\/pdfs\/content\/en\/initial-inspection-worksheet-cmhc-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Initial Inspection Worksheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In Vancouver, advertisements for rental accommodation are most plentiful near the end and beginning of each month. This is because most agreements require tenants to give one month notice if they plan on moving out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select a neighborhood you feel comfortable in<\/strong>. Research or visit any area you are not familiar with before committing to renting a place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Search for \u201c2053 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC\u201d<\/strong>, if you are using Google Maps to zero in on the UBC Sauder School of Business and find locations close by.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beware of scams!<\/strong> Vancouver is a competitive housing market, and although typically our students are able to find appropriate accommodations, it is important to be aware that scams do exist. So be aware and vigilant when working to secure housing.<br \/>\nSome warning signs of rental scams according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcac-acfc.gc.ca\/Eng\/forConsumers\/lifeEvents\/movingOut\/Pages\/Housingf-Fraudese.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial Consumer Agency of Canada<\/a>, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Rental rates that are well below the current market rates.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Landlords who require you to leave a deposit on the spot without any formal rental agreement in place or with a much later move-in date. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Someone who is asking for cash only and\/or personal information such as a SIN, bank account, credit card numbers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Someone who is willing to rent you a property without meeting you or doing a background check on you.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Links within emails that send you to websites asking for personal and\/or financial information. These are usually\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcac-acfc.gc.ca\/Eng\/forConsumers\/topics\/fraud\/Pages\/Emailand-Fraudepa.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">phishing emails<\/a>\u00a0that expose you to financial fraud.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Ads that show pictures of the outside of the property only, or pictures that do not match the actual property.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#short-term-accommodation-self--4\" >Short-term Accommodation &amp; Self-isolation<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"short-term-accommodation-self--4\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>If you need a place to stay while conducting your accommodation search, there are a large number of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and hostels in Vancouver. This page lists a few of the options, but there are many more to be found by doing a web search.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>Self-isolation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the status of COVID rules and regulations at the time of your arrival, you may have to self-isolate for a number of days.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housing.ubc.ca\/self-isolate\/vancouver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UBC website for self-isolation<\/a><\/strong>, packed with self-isolation accommodation and food options, as well as resources and tips, all designed to ensure your experience is as positive as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #002145;\"><strong>On-Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On-campus short-term accommodation is difficult to find if you are not scheduled to move into one of the on-campus residences at the beginning of the school year. However, you should begin the enrolment process for your children as early as possible after your arrival.<\/p>\n<p>A proof of address is required to determine school catchment and to register children in school.
