As an IMBA student, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a number of Global Learning offerings. Our Summer Study Abroad with select global exchange partners will give you a chance to select from a range of options with most of them spanning 2 to 3 weeks in length. Plus, we’re the only Canadian school to give you access to the Global Network for Advanced Management, spearheaded by the Yale School of Management. Student Obligations: Please note that you must attend all of your regularly scheduled classes according to the Professionalism, Attendance and Behavior Policy. Once your participation in the Global Opportunities is confirmed, please adjust your schedule accordingly. Should there be a timing conflict with a regularly scheduled class or exam and the Global Opportunity, students will need to drop the regular course or choose between the course and Global Opportunity, since concurrent registration is not permitted.
 
 

Global Network for Advanced Management

     

The University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business is the only Canadian member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), an international partnership spearheaded by the Yale School of Management dedicated to integrating international experience into graduate business education.

MBA students at Sauder’s Robert H. Lee Graduate School have unprecedented access to learning opportunities with business schools around the world – from Lagos to London, Cape Town to São Paulo, and Bangalore to Beijing.

An alliance of 32 leading institutions, Global Network provides a global platform for immersive international learning opportunities through joint teaching, program development and exchange. Including schools from regions representing a broad range of cultures and economic development, the initiative is designed to develop leaders who can astutely interpret geopolitical contexts, orchestrate diverse international teams, and leverage and engage resources around the world.

At the core of Global Network these programs are available to all MBA students:

Global Network Courses (SNOCs) are virtual for-credit classes, which link students through an online platform and video conferencing. Students from around the world collaborate on projects and strengthen transnational work group skills necessary for global business.

Global Network Weeks (GNW) give MBA students and faculty the opportunity to pursue intensive study at another network school in short courses that leverage the institutions’ perspectives, programs and faculty expertise. Alongside their network counterparts, students attend classes, tour local businesses, and meet with experts focused on current regional business problems. (IMBA students can participate in the March and June GNW)

Summer Study Abroad 2024

Your Passport to a Global Perspective

The  Summer Study Abroad program offers invaluable opportunities to study business from an international perspective and to experience life in a different culture firsthand. Students form life-long friendships, develop advantageous business networks and have the chance to explore new countries. The benefits of participating in an exchange program endure long after graduation. IMBA students participate in an exchange during the summer of the second year of the program.

If you want to gather first-hand knowledge about the culture and commerce of another country, and develop confidence to work on the world stage, take advantage of this exceptional opportunity.
Students participating in a Study Abroad program will gain  credit for their IMBA and add another top business school to their resume. IMBA Study Abroad programs take place during the summer months and vary in length from two to six weeks.

You can review the Exchange Study Reports from students who have previously participated in Exchange here (password: mbaexchange). Please select only the Reports that are for the Summer Programs.

Most of the above programs are offered by  exchange partners of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School, Sauder School of Business. UBC IMBA students, if selected to participate by the RHL Graduate School, do not pay tuition for these programs. Other expenses, such as Student Fees, are the responsibility of the attending student.

Exchange Partner programs require a 2-step application process. Firstly, UBC IMBA students need to apply to the RHL Graduate School (through UBC Exchange Application).  We will review your application, and if approved, nominate you to the selected school. You will then be required to complete paperwork and course selection directly with the host school.

Please note that space is in each program is limited and application does not guarantee acceptance.

How to apply

Students can apply for Summer Study Abroad starting in January 2024.

  • Review carefully  information and program links in the 2024 Summer Study Abroad Opportunities Document
  • Application is available through this link: Click Application Link
  • After you've started your application, you will be asked to make your program selections in the order of preference. You are encouraged to submit up to 3 selections, should your first choice be oversubscribed. Please make your selections carefully.
  • Each selection will require a short Essay detailing your reasons for applying (personal, academic, professional, etc.)
  • After you've started your application, you will be asked to submit your current Resume.
  • Complete and submit supporting documents by the application deadline
  • Application deadline will be February 11, 2024 with the exception of the University of Cologne Program on Doing Business in Germany: Future of Mobility in the Energy Landscape Programs, which have a deadline of Jan. 28th, 2024(this is due to the early nomination deadline set by the host school).

Additional Information

  • Review the Exchange Study Reports from students who have previously participated in Exchange here (password: mbaexchange). Select the Reports applicable to your Program (PMBA/IMBA Summer Study Abroad). Programs marked as FT MBA do not have a Summer Study Abroad Option.
  • Acceptance. Students accepted for the program will be notified by RHL prior to sending their nomination to the Host Institution. NOTE: acceptance by the RHL does not guarantee participation. Acceptance must be confirmed by the Host Institution. Participation is subject to policies as noted in the Mode of Delivery section below.
  • Enrolment. All students who are accepted in Summer Study Abroad must take the courses for credit and will be evaluated and given a grade by the instructor of each course. Students will receive a formal transcript from their host school
  • Credits. Credits vary from 1.5 to 4.5 UBC credits.  See the 2024 Summer Study Abroad Opportunities Document  for credit details
  • Registration and Grades. Participating UBC IMBA students will be registered in a UBC course  "BA 530 Study Abroad and Exchange", which has a PASS/FAIL standing. You will need to achieve a passing grade in order to receive a PASS on UBC transcript. You will have actual grades on the permanent record and transcript of your host School
  •  Number of Programs. Students will apply for one Summer Study Abroad Experience and list 2 additional ones in case the first one is oversubscribed. Students can only participate in one program.
  • Course Withdrawal. It is extremely important to mindful of your personal, professional and academic obligations when applying for the Summer Study Abroad. Please make sure you would be able to participate prior to submitting your application.  If there unexpected and extenuating circumstances which require you to drop your program after being accepted, please make every effort to withdraw as soon as possible prior to the course start. There are usually students on the wait list, waiting for a chance to enrol and preserve the spot in the reciprocal exchange balance.
    Withdrawal once the course starts follows Sauder RHL Withdrawal policy, and may only be requested with a legitimate reason. Late withdrawal will count towards the reciprocal exchange balance for our school
  • Tuition Fees. There are no additional tuition fees associated with the Study Abroad and Exchange taken during IMBA. Host School tuition fees are covered under the reciprocal exchange agreement. . Some schools will charge Student Fees, which include social fees - these are detailed in the 2024 Summer Study Abroad Opportunities Document

  1. Please review UBC Safety Abroad information below and ensure you fill in the UBC Safety Abroad registry for any UBC-related travel.
  2. Review the “Safe Travel Essentials” Presentation Document.
  3. Please monitor closely any government advisories and your host country regarding international travel.
  4. Please keep in touch with your host school for any updates.

Safety Abroad Registry and Information for students participating in UBC-related travel

  1. UBC Safety Abroad Registry:  UBC Safety Abroad Registry:  all RHL students travelling abroad must register. You can access the registry on this site: https://safetyabroad.ubc.ca/ . The registry takes 15 minutes to complete and you will want to have the following on hand to complete it: passport, insurance information, emergency contact details and your destination information.  Students are encouraged to review the pre-departure modules to learn more about how to prepare for a safe trip. Topics include emergency planning, insurance and health and wellness.
  1. International SOS: (Membership Card and Mobile Assistance App information attached) – International SOS is a medical and travel security assistance service provided to University of British Columbia students travelling abroad. Be sure to download the electronic membership card and mobile assistance app.
  1. Travel Insurance: Please ensure you have adequate travel health coverage/insurance prior to traveling.

Global Network Week - March 2024 - Application Information

Global Network Week - March 2024 (March 11, 2024 to March 15, 2024) - Application Information

Application Deadline: Thursday November 23rd, 2023 at 9:00 am PST (Vancouver Time)

Important to note:

  • Schools/Topics: You can view the list of participating Schools and topics for the March 2024 Global Network Week (March 11-15, 2024) on the Global Network Website. Students can also choose the UBC Sauder course.
  • Student Obligations/Attendance: Please note that you must attend all of your regularly scheduled classes according to the Professionalism, Attendance and Behavior Policy, so once your GNW participation is confirmed, please book your travel (if applicable) accordingly. Should there be a timing conflict with a regularly scheduled class or exam and the Global Network Week, students may need to drop the regular course.
  • Format and Credits: Participating UBC students will be registered in a UBC course “BA 532 Global Network Week” (1.5 credits), which has a PASS/FAIL standing but courses will be graded according to the Host School's standards. Upon successful completion, students will earn 1.5 credits as an elective towards their degree. All students will receive a certificate of completion from the host school.
    A typical course will include a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, company visits, culture dashes, and networking events. You are encouraged to review the course descriptions/outlines on the website to get an idea of the format. These may be subject to changes.
  • Costs: There are no additional tuition fees associated with the Global Network Week taken during your program, but some courses – such as the FGV EAESP expedition course – may incur additional program fees (please refer to the course descriptions). Please note, however, students are fully responsible for their own expenses related to travel and stay (if applicable), such as flights, accommodations, most meals and incidentals. Some meals, such as networking receptions, will be provided.
  • Network: Each participating school will host from 20 to 50 students from among all partner schools, with an average class size of 25-30. Each school can typically send 1-4 students to any given course.

     

    Selection Process and Application Form:

    • Selection Process: In case where a school is oversubscribed, lottery method will be used to determine selection, so all students have a chance at being selected for their top choice school first. Students who were not drawn for their first choice school will then be entered into the lottery for their second choice school, and so on, as long as seats are still available for those schools.   If the overall demand exceeds the total number of seats assigned to us, it is an unfortunate reality that some students might not be selected for any of their preferred schools.

     

    • Application Form: Students who are interested in participating in the March 2024 Global Network Week are asked to submit their top 4 choices by filling out this short application form.

     

    The application deadline is Thursday November 23rd, 2023 at 9:00am PST (Vancouver Time).

  • Schools/Topics: You can view the list of participating Schools and topics for the June 2024 Global Network Week (June 10-14, 2024) on the Global Network Website. Students can also choose the UBC Sauder course. Note that the Fudan University course runs from Tuesday June 11 to Saturday June 15, 2024. Also note that IIMB, NUS and SSE are all hosting two different courses (with the two SSE courses being on different campuses in different countries), so please ensure to choose the correct course when making your selections.

  • Please note that this is not a live document so if you click to apply and applications are closed it means that the course is no longer open to applications.
  • Applications will remain open until the course is full or until closer to the course start date. 
  • If you submit an application for any of these courses, you should expect to hear an outcome from GNAM in January.

Application Deadline: Friday December 1st, 2023

Global Network Small Network Online Courses (SNOCs) are virtual online classes, which link students through an online platform and video conferencing. Students from around the world collaborate on projects and strengthen transnational work group skills necessary for global business. SNOCs typically have classes once or twice a week, and last between 1.5 months and 3 months.

Interested students are encouraged to apply for the courses by December 1st, 2023. The first round of application decisions will be made approximately 2 weeks after the application deadline.

Brief descriptions and the timing of the courses are available on the GNAM website.  Please note that some of the syllabi may change slightly, but the SNOCs - Spring 2024 - Course Information and Application Document(see link below) contains full information with credits, course outlines and individual application links.

Important to note:

  • Admission: Acceptance into the courses is selective. Respective Host School instructor/Faculty will review all student CVs and statements of interest in the course and make selection decisions.
  • Enrolment: All students who enroll in courses must take them for credit and will be evaluated and given a grade by the instructor of the course. Audit is usually not permitted.
  • Student Obligations/Attendance: Please note that you must attend all of your regularly scheduled classes according to the Professionalism, Attendance and Behavior Policy, so once you have received SNOC acceptance from the host school, please adjust your schedule accordingly. Should there be a timing conflict, students may need to choose between the academic/career activity and the Global Course. Should there be a timing conflict with a regularly scheduled class or exam and the SNOC, students will need to choose between the regular course and the SNOC in advance, since concurrent registration is not permitted.
  • Credits: Credits vary from 1.5 to 3.0 UBC credits.  Some courses cannot be taken if a student took a similar course at UBC. Credits are listed in the SNOCs - Spring 2024 - Course Information and Application Document.
  • Registration and Grades: Participating UBC IMBA and PMBA students will be registered in a UBC course “BA 531 Global Network Course”, which has a PASS/FAIL standing but courses will be graded according to the Host School's standards. You will need to achieve a passing grade in order to receive a PASS on UBC transcript. Your Host School will also assign you a grade.
  • Number of Courses: Students can apply for more than one course, but the Global Network asks that you keep your applications to a maximum of 2 or 3 courses.
  • Course Withdrawal: Please be mindful of your personal, professional and academic obligations when increasing your load. If you wish to drop a course after being accepted, please make every effort to withdraw as soon as possible prior to the course start, to allow students on the waitlist a chance to enroll and to prevent team formation challenges. Withdrawal from SNOCs once the course starts follows Sauder RHL Withdrawal policy, and should only be requested with a legitimate reason. You must inform course instructor, the SNOC Coordinator (Elizabeth Wilkinson) and RHL (RHLglobal@sauder.ubc.ca) about your withdrawal.
  • Time Zones: Please note the time zones for the different courses and convert them to your local time zone to ensure they work for your personal/work/academic schedule prior top submitting your application.
  • Fees: There are no additional tuition fees associated with the Global Network Course taken during your program.
  • Guidelines: Please review SNOC Guidelines and Best Practices document for general guidelines and practices for all students in the Global Network.

  4. Review closely all the information including Schedules, Time Zones, and Syllabi in the SNOCs - Spring 2024 - Course Information and Application Document (above).
  5. Apply through the relevant Application Link corresponding to each course in the SNOCs - Spring 2024 - Course Information and Application Document (above).
  6. List your program as IMBA 2024.
  7. Students can apply for their own school’s course as well (UBC Sauder).
  8. Apply by December 1st, 2023.
