Managing your money is an essential part of student life and incoming students should be prepared to meet the majority of the financial need for the MM program prior to it’s start.
Financial Questions - Who to Contact
Enrolment Services Advisors and Associate Enrolment Services Advisors (ES Advisors) will still be your contacts as a graduate student and can assist across all areas of Enrolment Services. Some of the most common services are:
- Explaining tuition and student fees and advising on best methods of payment
- Financial assistance planning, specifically on student loans and the UBC Bursary
- Setting up a budget and exploring additional resources as needed (private loans, emergency funding).
- Workshops with respect to successful budgeting
- Advising on student records and documentation
- Referrals to other resources on campus
Graduate students are welcome to contact any member of the Enrolment Services team. The best ways to get in contact are:
- By phone at 604 822 9836 or toll-free at 1 877 272 1422
- By email using the Ask Me form
You can see a breakdown of your tuition and student fees on the Student Service Centre (SSC) - once you're logged in just click on the Student tab, then Financial, then SFM Account.
financial distress
If you're facing financial distress and/or have had a significant change to your financial situation, please speak with Rebekah Chotem, Manager, Master of Management or contact an Enrolment Services Advisor (ESA).
Tuition Payments & Fees
tuition fees
The remaining 70% of your MMDD tuition will be divided into two equal installments, which are due no later than:
-
- June 8, 2023 (Please note that the May deadline listed on SSC will be extended to June)
- September 6, 2023
You will see a tuition installment listed for January, however, you do not have to pay it. It will be removed once your program completion date is entered in SSC in December.
Students will be able to see the fees once registration is completed for you by the RHL Graduate School closer to May 2023. Students can access the general tuition amounts here. Please note that these may not perfectly correspond to your own amounts, but it will give you a general idea of what to expect.
Students pay their fees online through the Student Service Centre (SSC). Visit the UBC tuition website to learn about allowable methods of payment.
student levied fees
Similar to your undergrad, there will also be student-levied fees charged by UBC included in each installment. The exact amount of tuition and student-levied fees, as well as the payment deadline, will be on the SSC prior to each month that tuition is due.
-
- Compass Card Fees: With the ongoing pandemic, some changes have been made and continue to be made to the UBC Compass Card. Please check the UBC Compass Card web site for details on obtaining, opting out or applying for a financial hardship subsidy.
MMDD specific student levied fees
There are two specific fees for the MMDD program that will be due in their entirety with the first MMDD tuition installment in May:
-
- MMDD Society fee: This amount goes directly to your elected MM Society Executive and will help toward events and activities for your cohort.
- Sauder Building fee: All Sauder students pay the UBC Sauder School of Business Building Fee. This is a student-levied fee passed through a student referendum to help finance the new building.
To view a breakdown of tuition and student-levied fees, check the itemized list attached to each installment on the SSC.
*NOTE: All students are responsible for keeping up-to-date in paying tuition and student fees until the completion of their program. Students who have not paid their fees will be placed on financial hold; further registration will not be permitted, and grades will not be released. Students on financial hold will also be charged a processing fee by UBC, and interest will be assessed on the outstanding balance until it is paid in full.
Award Payments
If you were awarded an Entrance Scholarship at the time of admission to the B+MM Dual Degree program, you would have been notified by Sauder Admissions at that time.
All awards and/or scholarships will be paid toward your tuition, and any residual amount will then be issued to you. Students are encouraged to check their financial records on the Student Service Centre (SSC) for confirmation of award installment amounts and dates. Normally, awards are paid out using the following payment schedule:
-
-
- Under $1,000: paid out entirely in one term
- $1,000 - and above: divided equally and paid out in two terms
-
NOTE: Entrance Scholarships will not appear on the SSC until closer to the start of the program. If you were awarded an entrance scholarship and do not see it on your SSC account, please reach out to our office.
Loans
Students are eligible to apply for government student loan funding for the MM program through StudentAid BC.
These loans will not be enough to cover the full cost of tuition for the program, and it's common for students to look for additional sources of funding, such as a student line of credit. You are strongly encouraged to have financing in place for the full amount of MM tuition and student-levied fees prior to the June program start. Tuition will be due in two equal installments in May and September.
Please connect with your Enrolment Services Advisor (ESA) to discuss the options available to you.
loan applications
The MMDD program spans two Academic Years (AY):
- June – August (2022/2023 AY)
- September – December (2023/2024 AY)
Because of this, students in the MMDD will likely need to submit two loan applications:
- One (ideally) by March 30 for June – August
- One by July 15 for September – December
NOTE: Loans generally can take 4-6 weeks to be processed, so students would need to apply by April 15 at the latest to get notice of their loan funding in time for June.
Students require eligibility for the MMDD on the system for the 2023 Summer session before submitting a loan application. Eligibility for the MMDD should be on the system by the middle of March, but it is suggested that students start compiling their application for Summer session funding now, so it is ready to submit as soon as possible.
Tax Information for Students
In Canada, income tax is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The Canadian income tax year is from January 1 to December 31. If you owe income tax, you must pay it by April 30 for the preceding calendar year.
