Purpose

In our project, we will first assess the effects of developmental projects in British Columbia by quantifying the area of wetland to be lost to proposed projects, and subsequently locate and delineate optimal areas to propose new creation of wetlands to compensate for this loss. We will examine the suitable physical and ecological features to propose new wetland creations, aiming to shed light on the importance of conservation in our most vulnerable and valuable ecosystems.

Specifically, this paper aims to identify at least 513.6 km² of the most viable areas for wetland creation in order to compensate for the approximate 513.6 km² of wetland to be lost to development projects proposed in existing wetland regions. A thorough explanation of the methods used to estimate this area is provided in the Justifying the Buffer Size of the Projects Overlapping Existing Freshwater Wetlands section.
