We examine a process you may follow to develop or re-vision a family and community literacy program or initiative at your Aboriginal Head Start site. This learning unit is oriented to help you think through the stages of planning, designing,<br \/>\nimplementing and evaluating an Aboriginal family and community literacy initiative and give you tools and practical suggestions for these tasks.  This learning unit is applicable for Aboriginal Head Start sites that are already running family literacy programs or for those who are thinking about incorporating a new initiative or activities at their project site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Learning Ideas<\/strong><em><br \/>\n1.\tFamily and community literacy initiatives should build on Aboriginal approaches to literacy and learning. These approaches can include:<br \/>\n\u2022\tInvolving family, community, extended family, Elders, or other cultural resource people<br \/>\n\u2022\tInter-generational learning<br \/>\n\u2022\tCreating space for Indigenous knowledge<br \/>\n\u2022\tUsing oral traditions with families and children<br \/>\n\u2022\tThe importance of ceremony, song, dance, and land-based learning opportunities<br \/>\n2.\tThe importance of community input for all stages of program development or generating activities that build on the needs and interests of Aboriginal families.<br \/>\n3.\tThe importance of using evaluation to guide all stages of program and activity development.<br \/>\n4.\tUtilizing exemplary Aboriginal family and community literacy programs that can serve as models for literacy initiatives, and activities in Aboriginal Head Start sites.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Objectives of the Unit<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide strategies for planning, implementing, and evaluating Aboriginal family and community literacy programs and initiatives for Aboriginal Head Start sites.<br \/>\n\u2022\tProvide examples of Aboriginal family and community literacy programs and initiatives to support Aboriginal Head Start sites.<br \/>\n\u2022\tIndentify barriers to participation in family and community literacy programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Outcomes<\/strong><br \/>\nBy the end of this learning unit, you should have an understanding of:<br \/>\n\u2022\tHow to plan an Aboriginal family and community literacy program that utilizes community input and takes into consideration the interests, needs and resources of your program and community.<br \/>\n\u2022\tHow to identify possible barriers to participation in programs and how you might address them.<br \/>\n\u2022\tHow to incorporate Aboriginal best practices into an Aboriginal Head Start family and community literacy initiatives.<br \/>\n\u2022\tHow to use the family literacy worksheets provided to assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of an Aboriginal Head Start family and community literacy initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We begin this learning unit by introducing you to the key ideas to be presented, objectives and learning outcomes.
