It is apparent that technology is going to play a big part in teaching in the future. However, I have to always keep asking myself, how much technology should be valued in teaching.
As an art teacher, the most important part of having technology in teaching is to have students aware of the technology surrounding them. With all the fancy new electronic oriented technology flooding in students’ lives, they are often desensitized of it. And when the idea of using technology in lessons in classrooms comes up, students usually just think about computers, cell phones and other electronics. However, simple things like a pencil, a ruler, or even a brush they use to paint with are great technological tools.
To generate students’ interests in art by raising their awareness of technology:
1. Discussions through inquiring what are technology and the functionality of technology
2. Bring students’ interests and culture ( game make up, sports, electronics…etc.)
3. Help students to find a good balance between variants of traditional/or simpler tech-tools and more current tech-tools
4. Help students develop inquiry capacity for thinking about possible future tech-tools.
