During my practicum, I was able to have some parental interactions through phone contacts, parent-teacher night and individual meeting set ups. Even my sponsor teacher’s feed backs for my parental interactions are very positive: professional, follows proper procedures, good time-in…etc. However, I just felt there were not enough parental interactions as I would have hoped. And there was little mentioning and concerns about the importance of parental involvement in education in the school.
It is obvious how important it is to have parental involvement in education. It helps teachers to understand their students better, and it helps to paint a better picture of students to their parents. Often times students’ actions are misunderstood by teachers, but having to know the student’s family, it would help a great deal before making any hasty decisions labelling the student. And on top of that, I have noticed that when the parents/family members of a student knows more about what goes on in the student’s life at school, it helps the student to be better supported and eases pressure from parents/family. And that results in the student becoming more motivated about education.
In the same time, I am aware that some students come from broken families. But still, I would like to see the adults/care givers would be some what visible in their school lives. And I would like to (in my future practice) purpose events such as class/department fund raisers, fan arts night, class/ department art shows, gallery walks with students works and presentations. These are not just going to function as a type of attraction to show case students’ development, they are set up to have diverse time periods to provide opportunities for students’ families/relatives to get more in touch with students’ lives.
