Course Description
In this class, we will critically reflect on the intersections of memory, power and justice in the aftermaths of political violence such as war, genocide, state repression, slavery and settler colonialism. We will map the emergence of, and urgency placed on, memory and transitional justice in recent decades. What is the work of memory in seeking to correct historical wrongs and to insist on a just future? What is the responsibility of the witness? How are victims and perpetrators delineated, and responsibility assigned? What are the challenges and possibilities of documenting, curating and narrating difficult histories and knowledge in public sites of memory such as memorials, museums and exhibitions? What new social and political worlds are imagined and crafted through the work of memory? We will explore these questions through the concepts of collective memory, testimony, witnessing, post-memory, feminism, transitional justice, and freedom.
