English 301 is a course designed to teach students the elements of writing in business, professional and technical contexts. The course is completely online and engages it’s students through various discussion and analysis. Students will take part in peer review, which gives a great opportunity to have others that are learning the same material an opportunity to give feedback. Writing in a professional context requires a certain ability to convey your message. I expect this course to teach me the usefulness of different online resources while helping me develop my writing skills. Working in an online group format helps in focusing on the subject and material that we are being taught. A large portion of business and professional writing is submitted and reviewed online. I expect the structure of the class to be very similar to a business environment: professional writing with constructive feedback. The tail end of the course seems to focus towards taking the skills honed in the first half and applying to real world situations. This can be applying to a job or a grad school application. I appreciate the structure and expect everyone to submit their best work at this point. In most classroom settings you are merely submitting a project to attain the highest grade you can. With the projects set forth in this course, the benefits of creating great work can go further than an excellent grade. English 301 seems to be a great introduction to how to communicate in the age of technology. There are things such as sentence structure and how you convey a message through email that haven’t changed a lot. However, with new online applications such as LinkedIn, Facebook and blogging; there are a number of avenues that one can show their potential in the professional realm.
