Colour marketing

Since research shows that certain colours can change the emotions and psyche of a person’s mind, it only makes sense that marketers put a substantial amount of thought into what colours their brand will contain. Certain goods and services tend to have an advantage with a specific colour. Through some research, I will give you the basic emotions that most people get when they see a specific colour. However like music, colour can be quite a subjective matter. For example, blue may be seen as a calming serene colour, while someone else may feel cold and unwelcoming. The first stage of colour psychology states that there are 11 difference colours that either convey positive or negative signals. The second stage is the relationship between different colour combinations.  From my given examples, you can see that colour has an impact in sending a subliminal impression of brands and products.

Here are some fundemental emotions that are portrayed through the use of colours in marketing:

Pink: Youthful and energetic
Green: Calm and soothing, good emotions to make customer relationships built on trust.
Purple: Wealthy, prestigious, intelligence. No wonder Purdy's make such great gifts!
Orange: Optimism and vitality, makes a vitamin pill appear more beneficial
Red: Passion, heat, and excitement
Yellow: Creativity and Happiness
White: Pure, simple, yet youthful
Black: Boldness, Power, and sophistication.
Brown: Class and durablity. A mix of practicality and individuality.

KFC: Customer Relationship

http://beta.ca.news.yahoo.com/calgary-mom-bone-pick-kfc-over-choking-incident.html

(The full story is on the link) To summarize it, a mother of a two-year old daughter filed a complaint to KFC because her daughter nearly choked to death on a quarter-sized bone found inside a piece of popcorn chicken. In my opinion this probably isn’t a one in a million incident, it probably happens all the time but people just spit it out without much thought. The problem here is that KFC has now received  bad press and attention. I think KFC could have handled the situation better from improving communication with the mother addressing her concern. They should not wait until it has become a public issue and state they take it extremely seriously and they investigated their meat supplier… etc.. I think if the toddler died or was hospitalized, the effect on KFC would be a lot worse.

.

On the other hand, letting a 2-year old eat popcorn chicken in the car when nobody is sitting in the back may not be the wisest choice either. What do you think??

Interesting Ads

Here are some interesting ads that I found which made me stop and stare for a bit. Its not just a typical “i’m luvin’ it…” I think most of these ads wanted to use shock as an advertising tool to reach out to the public. Some of these are Non-Profit organizations which wants to raise awareness. I think these ads are effective in captivating the viewers attention, and although it isn’t necessarily a positive feeling you get, it definitely make you feel-

Farmville: FB game causes death

I understand that Facebook has become extremely popular and some people spend countless hours on it every week. Also, to my knowledge, another reason why people have spent more time on it is because of the addicting Facebook games. Today I came across a news article saying that  mother living in Jacksonville, Florida, shook her baby to death because the boy’s crying interrupted her focus on her game on Facebook (Farmville).  I personally have never tried this game but I don’t believe it was worth a child’s life. Quoted from the Florida Times-Union- “she told investigators that she was angered because the child was crying while she was playing. As a result she shook the boy, had a cigarette, and shook him again.” She was charged with second degree murder and could be in jail anywhere from 25-50 years.

I feel that this horrific news will negatively  impact Facebook’s image in an indirect way. Most people I think will blame this on the mother but others may even put some of the blame on Facebook. Others may simply shake their head in disbelief and say “WT@#$%?” I doubt Facebook will give a response to this, but if they do I am interested to hear what they have to say. Perhaps the next time Facebook is brought up in a conversation, someone will this up.

“Gotcha” promotion

Recently my friends and I marketed a UBC-wide game of Spy verses spy of “Gotcha” The objective is to “kill” your target by shooting them with water, before you are “killed”. A kill does not count if someone who is still in the game saw the actual shot. After successfully killing a target, you will receive a new target to hunt down. So at the end, the last person standing wins half the pot of money. The other half will go to a charity of his or her choice.

Using only a facebook group and mass emails didn’t really show how fun the game is so we made a video to promo our event with a camcorder and it had great success! Heres a link:

Guess what products they sell in Walmart (China)?

Rig Cages
Assortment of Frozen Reptiles
Frozen Crocs
Frogs

Here are some interesting pictures of the product mix in Walmart. So as you can see, there is a wide assortment of meat from duck to frozen crocodiles. I think this is a good example of how a company has adjusted its products to accommodate the consumers in a different setting. The macro environment is obviously very different in all aspects of CDSTEP. InChina, nobody would find this product mix appalling but here in Canada where it seems quite strange for a Walmart to sell these products it is shocking. This is also a good example of diversification where the market is different as well as the products.

Although some products are very different I can see the similarities in the store appearance. From observing the pictures, the store does not look like the typical department store in China. I’m planning to go to China again this summer, and I’ll definitely check out Walmart there!
