Overview
This section is designed to help you prepare for your first meeting with your Accessibility Advisor, whether you are new to UBC or new to the accommodation process. There may be a lot of information shared during your initial meeting. The topics outlined in this section will help you prepare for that discussion, and give you something to refer back to.
What to Expect in Your Meeting
When you register for your first appointment, you will be matched with an Accessibility Advisor who has experience in your specific faculty. This will be your Primary Accessibility Advisor that you will meet with going forward. During your initial meeting:
- you will be asked to share a bit about your personal story, academic experiences, and your priorities;
- your Accessibility Advisor will review and discuss your medical documentation with you;
- accommodations will be determined based on your experience and medical information; these may be adapted over time and with your Accessibility Advisor’s approval; and
- you will learn how to access your Letter of Accommodation (LOA) that confirms your registration with the Centre and who you should share the LOA with.
This meeting is an opportunity for you to be able to ask questions and learn about your responsibilities, as well as understand how to reach out for help and connect with your Accessibility Advisor or other Centre for Accessibility staff.
What to Expect from This Section
As each case is assessed based on its individual circumstances, this resource may not cover every possible scenario or question you have. It will introduce you to common questions, some of the basics around understanding and using your accommodations, and let you make the most of your first meeting with your Accessibility Advisor. Do not be afraid to share what is most important to you and be ready to communicate with your Accessibility Advisor often. The best solutions can be found when concerns or issues are discussed proactively.
