Because sea otters do not have blubber they rely on the heat storage of their fur to survive.\u00a0Oil clogs sea otter fur, making them unable to retain heat, resulting in hypothermia. The <a href=\"http:\/\/oceana.org\/en\/our-work\/stop-ocean-pollution\/oil-pollution\/learn-act\/exxon-valdez-oil-spill-facts\">Exxon Valdez<\/a> oil spill in 1989 had the most recent threatening impact on the sea otter population.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Fun Facts About Sea Otters<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">A sea otter in the wild typically eats a quarter of their body weight per day.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Sea otters have built in \u2018body pockets\u2019 located under their arms<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Sea otters are one of the only marine animals to use tools<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Sea otters have 1 000 000 hairs per square inch of hair<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">They are the only marine mammal without blubber<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Nuclear Testing in Alaska<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.0.$end:0:$0:0\">The arms race after world war II motivated the US to perform underground nuclear testing at Amchtika Island, Alaska. There were concerns raised about the close fault line, the geology, and natural habitat. <\/span><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.0.$end:0:$2:0\">However, testing still occurred in 1965, 1<\/span><\/span><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.3\"><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.3.0\"><span data-reactid=\".1z.1:3:1:$comment739023839510378_739135059499256:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.3.0.$end:0:$0:0\">969 and 1971.
