This is because when otters prey on urchins, kelp forests flourish. However, the 1800&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/seaotters.com\/2012\/03\/24\/the-legacy-of-the-fur-trade\/\">fur trade\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0decimated sea otter populations along the west coast of\u00a0North America.
