I was born in Vancouver on November 24, 1982. When I was young, I was engaged in many activities, both inside and outside of school. The activities, however, that always seemed to resonate best with me, were the ones that were connected with music. I was always very active in my elementary school choir, and I started taking piano lessons at the age of 9. I would continue playing the piano somewhat seriously until I was 13, when I went to a school that had a band. It was at there at Scott Creek Middle School where I started playing the alto saxophone.
I continued to play the alto sax in the band through grades 9, 10, and 11 at Gleneagle Secondary in Coquitlam, but in grade 11, my musical interests began to expand. Starting at the beginning of the year, I started playing the baritone sax in the jazz band, and in February of my grade 11 year, on a dare, I joined the choir. For the first month or so, it seemed almost like a joke, but after that, I began taking it more and more seriously, and started really enjoying it. When I started grade 12, I played the baritone sax in both concert and jazz bands, and I joined the choir at the beginning of the year.
I graduated from Gleneagle Secondary in 2001, and in the fall of that year, I began music studies at Capilano College. I started off as a baritone sax player in the Bachelor of Music Transfer program, but from the start of my time at Capilano, I was already seeing more success as a voice major. In my first year, I was accepted into the Capilano College Singers, and I went on a tour to Europe. It was after this tour that the director of choirs at Capilano, Lars Kaario, got in touch with me and personally took me under his wing as a voice student. For years afterwards, I studied voice with Lars, and became a member of his extra curricular chamber choir, the Laudate Singers. During this time, I would also take some time to explore other courses at Capilano. I took courses in Psychology, Biology, and even an Anthropology course while I was there. I even found a niche in creative writing, and before graduating from Capilano, I had some of my poetry published.
I graduated from Capilano in 2008, and took a year off before auditioning for UBC. I got accepted and began studying at UBC in the fall of 2009. While attending UBC, I continued studying voice with Peter Barcza, and joined the various choral ensembles there including the University Singers, the UBC Chamber Choir, and the UBC Choral Union, all under the direction of Dr. Graeme Langager. While I wasn’t able to all the time, I still tried to make time to be a member of Laudate. I graduated with Bachelor of Music Degree in 2013, and got accepted into the Bachelor of Education program at UBC for the fall of the same year.
I have had many amazing experiences in learning music, and I wish to pass on what I have learned, in order to enrich the lives of young people, and see them live lives that will be further enriched by their love and passion for music.
“I AM” Poem
I am positive and imaginative
I wonder how I will be perceived
I hear music
I see the horizon
I want happiness
I am positive and imaginative
I pretend to fly
I feel as though I can take on the world
I touch lives
I worry that someone will take my dreams from me
I cry when this thought gets the best of me, and yet
I remain positive and imaginative
I understand the work that is involved in achieving dreams
I say “face your fears, live your dreams”
I dream about getting there one day
I try, not to be the best, but to be better
I hope, one day, to say “I did it”
I am positive and imaginative
Damn mr. Turpin. nice poem.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
