You should be familiar with the material covered in GEOS 270, and that course or an equivalent is strongly recommended. Some of the topics that we will cover in this course include more advanced discussions on spatial interpolation, error and uncertainty, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and multi-objective decision making. You will gain advanced knowledge of GIScience by taking this course. GIScience often involves using particular GIS packages or frameworks, but neither is reducible to the other. If you wish to become more proficient in a particular GIS package, we can always provide more advice and you can check out options on Further Training under the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Resources page<\/a>. Regardless, the conceptual frameworks and technical skills presented in this course will complement the knowledge gained by taking GEOS 270, GEOS 372, GEOS 373 and GEOS 374, GEOS 472, and GEOS 479.<\/p>\n<p>Course material has been placed on this website and on Canvas for you to use and will be updated during the course. Best practices: before lecture meetings, read the associated notes and go into background and enrichment materials linked to each day within the schedule. Attend lecture and engage! Afterwards, review the slides and go back to other materials as needed. Active engagement is how to learn and succeed!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lab Meetings<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Labs are an excellent place for learning, for getting to know others, and for getting work done. You must sign up for a lab section and attend your own lab's time unless the TA grants you permission otherwise. The TA will be available in person at that time and may have important things to discuss, to announce, or to demonstrate. This is also a forum to ask questions and to have them answered. If they are one-off questions, they can be answered individually, but those that are more general may be answered for all those who are attending to benefit from. However, please keep in mind that the midterm quizzes will primarily draw questions from the lectures and Labs presented during class. You are able to use 'Remote Desktop' to go from your computer, whatever and wherever it is, to access the UBC Geography computer labs. There, you can run ArcGIS Pro and other course-related software.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the remote lab computers during nights and weekends to do your lab and project work; during lecture if we are during an activity together; and you can even 'share screens' of your lab computer with friends or partners on projects over Zoom so you can work and learn together.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 ><a href=\"#course-project-6\" >Course Project<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"course-project-6\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>Reading over the project description and starting to think of a potential topic area (and identifying potential project partners), sooner rather than later, will help you enjoy this course. Your course project can be team based or individual based. Working in teams may significantly help your grade.<\/p>\n<p>The project itself is due in December (see the Schedule for an exact date). Final project presentations will take place during the last week of classes. Final project proposals are worth 10 marks, final project presentations (in class) are worth 10 marks, the final project write-up is worth 30 marks. In total, the project is worth 30 percent of the course grade.<\/p>\n<p>Your course project is described in detail and many examples are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/projects\/\">Course Project tab.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><h3 ><a href=\"#regarding-privacy-the-internet-7\" >Regarding privacy, the Internet, and this course<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"regarding-privacy-the-internet-7\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>Learning to engage in collaborative work and publish in the era of the Internet are important to the learning objectives of this course. Contemporary GIS\/ci involves specialized internet-based services that you should gain experience and facility with. Additionally, to help you learn, I employ carefully chosen educational technologies.<\/p>\n<p>You'll want to stay safe and respect others when online. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250116203718\/https:\/\/www.femtechnet.org\/csov\/do-better\/\">FemTechNet has [curated] some good suggestions.<\/a> Current guides in the same spirit: <a href=\"https:\/\/onlineharassmentfieldmanual.pen.org\/\">PEN America's Online Harassment Field Manual<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssd.eff.org\/\">EFF's Surveillance Self-Defense<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getcybersafe.gc.ca\/\">Get Cyber Safe<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.takebackthetech.net\/\">Take Back the Tech<\/a>. We will touch on some of these issues, and where we haven't, I'm happy to have us discuss them in class.<\/p>\n<p>For now, I'd like to discuss one set of issues further. Much of your digital interaction will be with Department, University and\/or Canada-based computers. However, some sites\/services you will use will be on the open internet and\/or some will send data to\/from servers outside of Canada. These services may include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Esri servers and websites, including ArcGIS Online<\/li>\n<li>Other sources of GIS data;<\/li>\n<li>Many Generative-AI services (e.g., ChatGPT), whose servers are outside Canada (see 'Collaboration with fellow people and with machines' below)<\/li>\n<li>Online GIS forums<\/li>\n<li>Ways of hosting material you produce in this course (e.g., UBC Blogs, which has the capability of publishing to the open internet).<\/li>\n<li>Other services that you elect to use in your work for the course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of these services request you to register or provide you with contexts in which you may be able to share personal information. UBC cannot guarantee security of your personal information on servers outside of Canada. In general, please exercise caution whenever using personal information on the internet. Please know that in this course <strong>you are not required to share any personal information with online services where your data may leave Canada. <\/strong><em>If at any time you have questions about your privacy in this course, please do raise them with me before acting, and we will work together to find appropriate paths of action or alternatives.<\/em> Please also keep the following in mind:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On non-UBC services that require registration, you can complete this course if you register with a pseudonym, non-personally-identifiable email address, and with other information that cannot be used to identify you. Some students may elect to register for a particular non-UBC service in a way that can identify them (and their work) to individuals outside of this course, perhaps as part of building a body of work that future employers or graduate schools might recognize (e.g., a blogging\/website hosting platform), but this is entirely a matter of one's own choice. As a practical matter in this class, it is entirely sufficient for me to be told your usernames, whatever they are, via secure Canvas submissions (n.b.: UBC's Canvas is hosted by Amazon Web Services in their Montreal \/ Canada (Central) Region datacenters.)<\/li>\n<li>Even more generally, when you are using internet services for 370 other than those that UBC itself provides for teaching and learning, this course does <strong>not<\/strong> require you to write your name, CWL, UBC email, or student ID; use your photograph; or offer any other personally-identifiable information at any time. The obligations of the course can be met without typing or entering anything that may be able to identify you. This is good practice, especially if you are unsure about whether a service protects your personal information to the degree that you, UBC, B.C. law, and\/or Canadian law envision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have further concerns that these or other issues raise for you, please contact me as soon as possible (and while Add\/Drop is easy) so we can determine what accommodations are feasible that will let you take and meet the objectives of this course.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><h3 ><a href=\"#productive-learning-environmen-8\" >Productive Learning Environments and Academic Integrity<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"productive-learning-environmen-8\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>Classroom Considerations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please do not attend class when sick, keep your classmates healthy!<\/li>\n<li>Silence or turn off phones during lecture<\/li>\n<li>Please be considerate eating in class. If possible limit meals to the first 10 minutes of class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Respect<\/span>: It may seem obvious, but your classmates must be able to expect that you will help maintain a productive environment for their learning. In this class, we need to follow academic conventions, which call for discussing our differences with each other without making them personal. The need for reasoned debate is at least as real online as it is in person. I know that working with others can be challenging, but please remain respectful. If there are difficulties for you in class you think I should know about, please feel free to contact me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Honesty and Conduct:<\/span> From the beginning, we require that you know and uphold the university\u2019s high standards for student conduct and academic honesty. In a GIS course, we're not just concerned with integrity in writing, but with all work in the many media and genres you do\/create\/author. Here are some of the standards that are very important for you to understand--take the time to read them, especially if you have not done so before: <a href=\"https:\/\/learningcommons.ubc.ca\/academic-support\/academic-integrity-citations\/\">Academic Integrity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca\/campus-wide-policies-and-regulations\/student-conduct-and-discipline\/discipline-academic-misconduct\">the Calendar's policies on Academic Misconduct.<\/a> As described in these documents, the consequences of violations can be serious. Potential violations will be referred to the appropriate offices of the university. If, after reading these materials, or at any other time, you have any questions about the standards you need to uphold, seek help immediately, from us and from the appropriate academic officers, some of which are referred to in the links above. Do <em>cite everything.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/learningcommons.ubc.ca\/academic-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avoid Plagiarism Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div><h3 ><a href=\"#collaboration-with-fellow-peop-9\" >Collaboration with fellow people and with machines (AI)<\/a><\/h3><div id=\"collaboration-with-fellow-peop-9\" class=\"accordian-shortcode-content \" ><\/p>\n<p>Collaboration is key to success in GIS\/cartography. Even when we seem to be working alone, we are relying on the contributions of countless others. What is key is that we endeavour to be clear about the webs in which we are enmeshed--clear for ourselves, and certainly in academic contexts, certainly, also for those who encounter our work. In the case of this course, you will often be asked to work with others. When you work with others in the course, all of you need to ensure the others understand what has been done, why, and what it means. When you work with others in the course, you also all need to explain to me what each person contributed. When you draw upon software packages or books or articles or websites or blogs or Medium.com or community discussion sites such as StackOverflow or Quora or what-have-you, you need to document it clearly and in detail in your work that you turn in. Otherwise, if you fail to follow the above, it's a breach of academic integrity, as referenced in the previous section.<\/p>\n<p>It's now important that each UBC syllabus include an AI statement in particular, as well. In the past few years, it's become easy for us to access and use advanced artificial intelligence models, most notably those that are often referred to as LLMs or Gen AI (Generative AI). These include ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Fable, among others. Being mindful about how we do or don't use AI is exceedingly important to our individual and collective long-term success. Many argue that it is those with a degree of skill and experience and judgement in a domain who can make the best use of such technologies (as it likewise is with books and articles and discussion websites.) I don't want to merely facilitate transient and mediocre shortcuts, I want you to be empowered. Being reflective about what you are doing and about what other people and machines are doing is valuable in this regard. Our principles for the academically honest and constructive use of advanced AI in this course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where we ask you to not use Gen AI, do not use Gen AI;<\/li>\n<li>We may allow some uses of AI in some circumstances while disallowing other types of use;<\/li>\n<li>In general, we disallow all use of AI to write text that you are to turn in (or present on slides);<\/li>\n<li>In general, we disallow use of AI in support of doing the labs, though you may ask AI to explain individual concepts\/procedures associated with labs;<\/li>\n<li>For the final project, there may be circumstances where we agree with you in writing that taking on a particular analysis in partnership with AI is acceptable.<\/li>\n<li>Where you are working with others, there must be transparency and consensus built around AI usage. Please do not paste classmates' work or personal information into any AI tool.<\/li>\n<li>Where you are allowed to and make use of advanced AI (or similar), you should make it clear to us, including via documenting it for us in detail. In the case of ChatGPT, this would include telling us the prompts and results.<\/li>\n<li>You need to be able to explain to others, including me, the meaning of what your digital partner, the AI, contributed. You can't just use it and not understand the results.<\/li>\n<li>As this syllabus indicates, I will speak with almost all of you, likely on multiple occasions, about your labs (and other assessments if appropriate). Those conversations will also help ensure we are all getting what we should be out of the class learning and assessment processes.<\/li>\n<li>Rules for individual assignments take precedence over any of the above.<\/li>\n<li>We do not require the individual direct use of Gen AI to excel in the course--alternatives will always be provided. I am quite mindful of many dangers, challenges, damages, inefficiences, and lost opportunities that AI offers.<\/li>\n<li>At the same time, I use some AI (largely via Claude Code but where appropriate via open weight LLMs I host at UBC) in relation to this course to improve the learning experience for you. In many cases, I am able to 'keep a human in the loop'. I verify (and sometimes update) the currency of materials I reference and data\/procedures you\/I rely on. I write a lot of code in collaboration with AI, including to produce some of the interactive visualizations we use in class. I am happy to talk to you about any of my usage in or out of class.<\/li>\n<li>We do not use AI with your materials, with several possible exceptions: 1) Anything UBC or third parties use AI for; 2) perhaps, if you ask me to, I might use AI to help you on something; and 3) we may seek opinions from pangram.ai about particular parts of text (which do not include personal information in the legal sense) as one bit of perspective on many contributing to our understandings of your work and how it came about.<\/li>\n<li>As this is a very dynamic area of technology and society, our rules and principles for AI may change, likely with class consultation, and regardless, you will be well informed.<\/li>\n<li>If in doubt, please ask! I'm always excited to discuss AI.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that some data products you may wish to use are the product of AI as well.
