{"id":401,"date":"2015-11-25T12:07:03","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T19:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/?page_id=401"},"modified":"2026-01-13T15:44:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T23:44:31","slug":"lab-material","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/lab-material\/","title":{"rendered":"Labs"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>General Lab info<\/em> ; <em>ArcGIS Pro Login info<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/courses\/178091\/modules\">available through Canvas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Instructions on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/courses\/178091\/modules\">how to access ArcGIS Pro over the internet<\/a> <\/em>by remotely logging onto the UBC VPN and then using &#8220;Remote Desktop&#8221; to use a Geography Department Lab computer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Credentials:<\/strong> Your TA has your lab computer login\/password you&#8217;ll need to sign in. You may receive them in a message from Jose on Canvas as well.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first time<\/strong> you sign in to a lab computer this term, you should go to the File Explorer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tutorialspoint.com\/windows10\/windows10_file_explorer.htm\">(?)<\/a>, go to the C: drive, go into the &#8216;Apps&#8217; folder, and double click on the file &#8216;RunOnce.bat&#8217;. This finishes setting your lab account up. Your TA can help if you&#8217;re confused.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Logging off:<\/strong> After you are done with the computer, SIGN OUT. Do not shut down. Do not just close the program.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storing your lab data:<\/strong> When using the lab computers, we recommend that you keep your lab data on the <em>H:\\<\/em> for safekeeping. But when you want to work on it, first copy it from the network drives (<em>H:<\/em>) to <em>C:\\temp\\G370\\Labx<\/em> (where &#8216;<em>x<\/em>&#8216; is replaced by a lab number). You can ZIP your files all and move them back and forth in one .zip file if you want. This will speed up logins and logouts to the lab computers and make the network better for everyone. It will also make it easier to follow the instructions (which assume that the Project and associated files are stored in <em>C:\\temp\\G370\\Labx<\/em> ). <em>But be sure to copy your files back to H:\\ at the end of a work session! <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/lab-material-resources\/data-management\/\">See this link for more detail.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lab Fees:<\/strong> A $20 lab fee is required to cover some of the costs of running the computer lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.touchnet.net\/C20435_ustores\/web\/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=256&amp;SINGLESTORE=true\">payable online<\/a>; must be paid by the end of January).<\/li>\n<li><strong>When to use the labs:<\/strong> In addition to your scheduled lab time, when the TA will be accessible, the lab computers will be available 24\/7 except when maintenance issues arise. You should, however, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geog.ubc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2025\/12\/RES_W2025_LabSchedT2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">respect the times of other labs<\/a><\/strong> so that students and their TA have the opportunity to work together during their own session.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late Policy:<\/strong> All labs must be handed in by the time specified on Canvas. <em><strong>Winter 2025 term 2: during the first 48hrs following the lab deadline, a 5% per day penalty will be deducted. A penalty of 10% per day will be deducted for late labs starting 12:00am Monday.<\/strong><\/em> Late labs will only be accepted (for marks) up to one week after they are due. Note that plagiarism is to be avoided in preparing your labs and in your project.
