{"id":83,"date":"2015-11-16T15:31:07","date_gmt":"2015-11-16T22:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/?page_id=83"},"modified":"2025-01-14T12:37:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T20:37:01","slug":"representing-geography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/schedule\/slides\/representing-geography\/","title":{"rendered":"Representing Geography: Data Models and Axioms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"level01text\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/advancedgis\/files\/2015\/11\/Space.gif\" alt=\"Space\" width=\"348\" height=\"209\" \/>In this lecture we&#8217;ll consider how space is most commonly conceptualized in GIScience (e.g., fields and objects\/entities) and how those concepts are implemented as GIS data models (and the advantages and disadvantages of the two fundamental models of space&#8211;grids or rasters and vectors); basically, how is geography represented in a GISystem?<\/p>\n<p class=\"level01text\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/28813018\/Integrating_Fields_and_Objects_in_Geographic_Information_Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In this short paper (scroll down for text!)<\/a> Antony Galton provides a theoretical review of the conceptualization of objects and fields, while in GIS Basics: <strong>Chapter 4<\/strong> (Data models for GIS; links below) the discussion is centred around the implementation of models of space in a computer. You could say that Galton presents the <strong>GIScience<\/strong> perspective while Chapter 4 presents the <strong>GISystems<\/strong> perspective.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to recognize that your <em>conceptual<\/em> view of the world should be independent of the <em>programmatic<\/em> view of the world. (<strong>If you are thinking of becoming a GIS Analyst, you should bookmark this online text<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 4: GIS and network analysis in <a href=\"http:\/\/resolve.library.ubc.ca\/cgi-bin\/catsearch?bid=11955897\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GIS and the Social Sciences<\/a> by Dimitris Ballas, Graham Clarke, Rachel S. Franklin and Andy Newing provides a very easy to follow introduction to network analysis. (<strong>If you are a human geographer interested in GIS, you should bookmark this text<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spatialreference.org\/ref\/epsg\/?search=4326&amp;srtext=Search\">Here is a link to WKIDs (spatial references) that ESRI and QGIS use to identify projections<\/a>.
