Unit 5 introduces important concepts and processes related to the time-honoured practice of storytelling in Aboriginal learning and literacy. This learning unit builds on the content and activities introduced in previous units, by elaborating on how Aboriginal storytelling can be incorporated into early childhood learning settings. Although storytelling is common across many cultures all over the world, Aboriginal storytelling fulfills several important cultural functions, including the passing on of oral history and the education of young community members.<\/p>\n

Key Learning Ideas<\/h3>\n

* Aboriginal cultures pass knowledge from generation to generation through oral traditions.<\/p>\n

* Storytelling is a traditional method used to teach about cultural beliefs, values, customs, rituals, history, practices, relationships, and ways of life.<\/p>\n

* Aboriginal storytelling involves voice, expression, intonation, verbal imagery, animation, plot and character development, repetition, pacing, and authentic recall.<\/p>\n

* Listening to Aboriginal storytelling involves attention, imagination, envisioning, reflection, interpretation, analysis, and meaning making.<\/p>\n

* Aboriginal storytelling is a foundation for holistic learning, relationship building, and experiential learning.<\/p>\n

* Aboriginal storytelling can be applied to enhance child and family literacy and cultural identity.<\/p>\n

Objectives of the Learning Unit<\/h3>\n

* Understand the principles and rationale of Aboriginal storytelling in promoting literacy and holistic learning.<\/p>\n

* Integrate Aboriginal storytelling into the planning of early child development and family literacy programs.<\/p>\n

* Develop appropriate learning activities that incorporate concepts and processes inherent in Aboriginal storytelling.<\/p>\n

* Analyze how Aboriginal storytelling can be included to promote holistic learning, relationship building, and experiential learning within the early childhood setting.<\/p>\n

* Recognize how evolving technologies can be used to complement traditional approaches to storytelling (for instance, audio recordings, video and multimedia productions and websites for sharing stories).<\/p>\n

Learning Outcomes<\/h3>\n

At the completion of this learning unit you should:<\/p>\n

* Recognize how storytelling plays a central role in preserving and transmitting Aboriginal worldviews, values, ways of life, and ways of knowing and learning.<\/p>\n

* Encourage children and their families to engage in storytelling within the early childhood education setting as well as in the home and community.<\/p>\n
