{"id":2747,"date":"2019-04-24T14:40:24","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T21:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/agora\/?page_id=2747"},"modified":"2024-10-29T10:03:43","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T17:03:43","slug":"sustainable-food-access-fund","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/agora\/sustainable-food-access-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"How We Started"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/agora\/files\/2023\/08\/2f7a4765-85ea-4b66-851a-4b6d69b58a72-e1692573856563.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3489 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/agora\/files\/2023\/08\/2f7a4765-85ea-4b66-851a-4b6d69b58a72-e1692573856563.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a>Background<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 2016-2017 academic year, students active in the sustainable food groups on UBC campus (Nikki Lax, Sam Puddicombe, Meryn Corkery, Sarah Siska, and Dakota Fozzard) proposed a new way to provide students with access to alternative food, and also ensure the long-term sustainability of the food spaces on campus by creating \u2018The Sustainable Food Access Fund.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of \u2018The Sustainable Food Access Fund\u2019 is to increase the affordability of four campus food outlets \u2013 UBC Sprouts, Agora Caf\u00e9, Roots on the Roof, and UBC Farm. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This referendum funds these four initiatives to achieve their goal of providing UBC students access to sustainable food. Agora Caf\u00e9 and UBC Sprouts receive funding to continue offering low prices, expand community programs, and increase sourcing from on-campus food producers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students were asked to vote yes in support of the following statement: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI support the AMS establishing a Sustainable Food Access Fund through a refundable fee of $0.35* to support on campus sustainable food initiatives (subsidize food prices and increase programming at Agora Caf\u00e9 and UBC Sprouts, and offer a student discount at the UBC Farm Market and Roots on the Roof).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March of 2018 the referendum question was successfully passed with a significant proportion of votes in favour from students.
