Save the date, the Satellite gallery is opening October 23rd, 2010. When I first read about the construction club Five Sixty over a year ago, a larger than life party space complimented with an arts space on the top floor, I’ll admit I was skeptical, it sounded perhaps too good to be true. To see it finally opening a year later, I am pleasantly surprised and excited. With the closure of the Belkin’s old satellite gallery in 2003, a space which facilitated numerous learning opportunities for UBC students, I’m sure many students will look forward to working with this space.

With gracious funding from the Michael O’Brian Family Foundation, the Satellite gallery will be shared with the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, The Museum of Anthropology, Presentation House Gallery, and Blanket Contemporary Inc. This will be an interesting shared space, which will allow patrons, students, and art critics alike the chance to explore a variety of institutional and artistic practices. As a student who has worked in both museums and commercial galleries, it will be interesting to see how museum and gallery practice is articulated in the same space. This will be an especially exciting opportunity for UBC students, as the Satellite space will allow students the opportunity to exhibit new projects and directly interact with Vancouver’s public.

The party kicks off at 6 p.m, and runs till about 9:00. There will be few things to check out at the opening. Glenn Lewis’ video installation 4 Intersections,  will be on display, which is part of Presentation House Gallery’s ongoing exhibition Flakey: The Early Works of Glenn Lewis. As well, Victoria-based artist Peter Morin will be in house to perform Petroglyphs. Using a button blanket and new petroglyphs, Morin explores the relationships between traditional knowledge, community, and the urban space. Blanket is also opening their latest exhibition Crisis Line, works by Matthias Dornfeld. Donfeld with paper and canvas, explores non realistic landscapes and the magical using saturated, dramatic colours and techniques. In all, it looks like an event that shouldn’t be missed!

This week Art Films 101 continues with the screening of Basquiat: The Radiant Child (1996). The film follows the story of Jean-Michel Basquiat who began as a street artist and later became a protoge of Andy Warhol. The movie tells the story of this artist’s incredible rise to fame while following his artistic practice.

Thursday October 21st, 2010 – 5:00 p.m in Lassere 105

Rumour on the street is that there will be more popcorn, and movie watchers are going to grab a coffee and discuss the film after, feel free to come along!

Fancy a visit to Granville Island this week? Skip the market crowds and head over to Emily Carr’s Concourse Gallery, where you will find The Exchange Show. This annual exhibition showcases artwork from 30 fourth year students who have recently returned from exchange programs in North America, Europe and Australia (Click here for a full artist list). Works presented in the show thus reflect each artists interaction from the places which they have travelled, drawing influences from a variety of different cultures. The shows at the Concourse tend pass by quickly, so if you are interested, make sure you get there before its gone. Hope you can attend

It was quite an adventure at Spanish Banks last Thursday. After a glorious morning bike ride in the sunshine, I met up with a bunch of art history and visual artists students from both UBC and Emily Carr to help out with Glenn Lewis’ performance piece, Four Hundred Yards of Burned Paper in a Square. While Lewis’ reperformance wasn’t quite like the original rendering, it was quite an experience, and I think we all enjoyed taking part. In concept, the idea of laying out 400 yards of paper didn’t seem particularly arduous, but if you factor in coastal winds, uneven ground, and sudden, sweeping tide, and it made the whole experience pretty tricky.

Next Saturday, October 16th, my awesome friend Suzy, and fellow art history student (in collaboration with CANZINE 2010) is putting on a great event, La Folie, at the W2 Storyeum in gastown.
