Reel Injun is an entertaining and insightful look at the Hollywood Indian, exploring the portrayal of North American Natives through a century of cinema. Traveling through the heartland of America and into the Canadian North, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond looks at how the myth of “the Injun” has influenced the world’s understanding – and misunderstanding – of Natives. With clips from hundreds of classic and recent films, and candid interviews with celebrated Native and non-Native directors, writers, actors, and activists including Clint Eastwood, Robbie Robertson, Graham Greene, Adam Beach, and Zacharias Kunuk.

Faces is a group exhibition that explores how ‘faces’ are represented in artwork. This exhibition breaks the convention of faces = portraiture. Each artwork has been carefully selected to help address notions of gender, race, and important social and historical contexts. With over 100 different pieces by established Canadian and international artists (Dana Claxton, Charles Edenshaw, Geoffrey Farmer, Lawren Harris, Liz Magor, Joan Miro,  Joyce Weiland, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Paul Yuxwelupten the list keeps going). This exhibit is solid. Do attend.

Centre A’s latest exhibition is a collaborative show by Canadian artists Natalie Purschwitz and Kelly Lycan. These two artists have worked together for the last several months to collect, arrange and create site-specific installations comprised of plastic. Their work explores notions of collecting, and how public and private life governs our perceptions of the material world. For more information on the exhibition visit Centre A’s website.

Next week VASA is hosting MESH, a one night, collaborative arts event to run in conjunction with UBC’s Arts Week. The night will consist of performance art, theatre, open studio, film and more. MESH will be take place in two spaces: the Dorothy Somerset Studio as well as the Theatre-Film Production Building. This is great opportunity to see and interact with the great talents of our undergraduate students. Don’t miss it!

Just in time for UBC’s upcoming Arts Week, AHSA is hosting the second edition of our Careers in the Arts Symposium. We have another great list of guest speakers that cover a wide range of positions in the art field.If you are graduating soon, or you are curious about your future job options in the arts this is a great event to attend.  Hope to see you all there!

I hope everyone is well rested and enjoyed the holiday. After a bit of a hiatus on the blog, we back on track, and will continue to blog about upcoming AHSA and other related events around Vancouver. And there are many things to write about. Next week there is another Career Night (with a line up of interesting guest speakers), the continuation of Film Nights, and Arts Week. The Undergraduate Symposium is fast approaching, along with many openings. Stay tuned for more details!

The 14th annual Eastside Culture Crawl is soon approaching! The event runs from November 26th-28th. This is an exciting opportunity for the public to interact and engage with the many artists that practice in our city. If your looking to learn about new artists, or perhaps take some artwork home, this is an event you shouldn’t miss out on. The three day event is always an interesting experience, as it bridges between fine art and craft, creating an unique mix of artistic practice. Most of the studios can be found in Gastown, but there are many others situated between the northern ends of Clark and Victoria. The first issue of Arftul, AHSA’s monthly newletter was released this month. We’re still looking for contributing writers, for the upcoming editions, so if you are interested in writing drop the editors an email. Next months theme is working and careers in the arts.
