Using GenAI as Personal Tutor

This challenge demonstrates how Generative AI can serve as a personalized tutor, offering subject-specific instruction through interactive, conversational learning.

By crafting effective prompts and engaging in a tutoring session, educators and learners can explore AI’s ability to guide understanding, assess prior knowledge, and deepen critical thinking. This activity emphasizes the use of AI to scale tutoring support, making expert guidance more accessible and adaptable across disciplines.

Challenge

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can simulate one-on-one tutoring sessions in nearly any subject. With a well-designed prompt, you can direct the AI to assess understanding, ask follow-up questions, and teach complex topics using adaptive strategies. This challenge invites you to explore AI’s role as a tutor and reflect on its effectiveness for educational use.

Instructions

  1. Access a GenAI model such as Claude, MS Co-Pilot or ChatGPT
  2. Create or customize a tutoring prompt. Use the example below or tailor it to your subject and learner level: “You are an expert tutor in political science, specializing in Canadian public policy. Tutor me in this area. I am a third-year political science student studying the role of the notwithstanding clause in Canadian provincial and federal politics. Use Socratic questioning to assess my knowledge and guide me toward a deeper understanding. Start by asking me the first question.”
  3. Run the prompt and engage in a live tutoring session. Allow the AI to lead with questions and provide explanations. Respond as a student would, and observe how the AI adapts.
  4. Evaluate the experience. Was the AI able to guide your learning effectively? Were the explanations clear, accurate, and personalized?
