GenAI and Brainstorming

This challenge showcases how GenAI can be used to both generate and evaluate creative thinking in a classic brainstorming exercise—the Alternative Uses Test (AUT).

By treating GenAI as both a creative partner and a reflective tool, students are encouraged to push the boundaries of divergent thinking. They not only brainstorm alternative uses for a common object but also compare their ideas with those generated by AI, using creativity metrics like fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. This activity fosters metacognition and expands students’ awareness of their own creative processes, making it especially powerful in design, innovation, psychology, or creativity-focused courses.

The Challenge

Complete the AUT both individually and with a GenAI assistance. First, generate ideas on your own. Then, use ChatGPT, MS Co-pilot, Claude or Gemini to expand on your list, categorize ideas, and reflect on the quality of your thinking.

Instructions

1. Choose a Common Object
Select a simple, everyday item such as a brick, paperclip, sock, spoon, or shoelace.

2. Step One – Human First
Set a timer for 3 minutes.
Write down as many alternative or unusual uses for the object as you can. Aim for volume—don’t self-censor.

3. Step Two – Now GenAI
Use the following prompt:

“Give me 20 unusual or creative uses for a [chosen object] that go beyond its original purpose.”

Optional Enhancements:
