This challenge explores how AI-generated resources can support student research and pre-writing.
By using STORM, a structured writing tool developed at Stanford University, educators and students can generate detailed, Wikipedia-style articles that include references and a table of contents. This approach supports foundational knowledge-building while encouraging critical thinking around source accuracy, depth of content, and bias. Students learn not just from the content itself, but from the process of evaluating and revising AI-generated materials—an essential skill in the age of generative AI.
Challenge
STORM is an AI-powered writing assistant designed to help users create structured, reference-rich articles on a wide range of topics. In an educational context, this tool can help students scaffold their research, develop thesis questions, and transition into the writing process more effectively.
This challenge invites you to explore how STORM can support research and pre-writing in your discipline. Rather than simply accepting the AI-generated content, students are encouraged to analyze the article critically—identifying strengths, inaccuracies, missing perspectives, or biases. This exercise not only deepens understanding of the topic but also reinforces media literacy and source evaluation.
Instructions
- Create a free STORM account
- Select STORM from the drop-down
- Input a topic relevant to your course or discipline (e.g., “Photosynthesis,” “Blockchain in Healthcare,” or “Postcolonial Literature”).

- Accuracy of information
- Depth and clarity of explanation
- Presence of bias or missing perspectives
- Assign a student task: Have them annotate the article, critique it, and suggest revisions. Optionally, they can write an improved version or expand on a section for further research.
- Use the AI-generated content as a launchpad for discussions, research projects, or writing assignments.
