Masters of “transient advantage”

In classmate Rishab Lamba’s blog, he talks about Microsoft’s upcoming new products and how these are revolutionizing the tech world. In addition to new information based technology, Microsoft plans to roll out its first ever laptop, the Surface Book, as well as the Surface Pro 4. Alongside these product releases, Microsoft has opened a flagship store in Manhattan.

I agree with Rishab’s opinion stating that Microsoft is revolutionizing their business model and improving their points of differentiation from highly competitive opponents such as Apple. To add onto Rishab’s point, I also believe that Microsoft is perfecting its “transient advantages” in order to stay current and fluid. While Microsoft before focused lots of software, it is now shifting gears towards physical products such a its tablet and newly released laptop. I really believe that in an industry that is as fast changing as the technology industry, it is imperative that companies seek transient advantages in order to remain competitive.

In addition to pursuing different revenue streams, Microsoft has changed their business model and specifically its revenue streams. With the introduction of its cloud based service, Microsoft is expected to make $1.6 billion – a drastic addition to its current revenue streams.

Microsoft is just one example of a tech giant diversifying and expanding its operations and with such great expansion, similar strategies will be employed by its competitors. Microsoft is just the tip of the iceberg that is the tech industry.
